Hayward remained sidelined for the second day of mandatory minicamp Wednesday due to a hip injury, Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Hayward has displayed his ball-hawking abilities the past two seasons, racking up four interceptions last year to back up a seven-pick campaign in 2016. While his offseason will be temporarily put on hold as he deals with some soreness, there's nothing at this point to suggest the issue will leak into the regular season.
Hayward did not participate during OTAs on Monday due to an undisclosed injury, reports Eric D. Williams of ESPN.com
The injury is likely insignificant, as the 2017 second-team All Pro hasn't been linked to any sort of medical issues throughout the offseason. Hayward is expected to participate in OTAs when he is deemed healthy given he agreed to a three-year extension in March that will pay the 28-year-old cornerback close to $12 million per year.
In two seasons with the Chargers, Hayward has recorded 11 interceptions and 42 passes defensed, making him an All-Pro both seasons and solidifying him as a top-tier cornerback in the league. The extension is reportedly worth $36 million, with $20 million guaranteed.
Hayward tallied 40 tackles, four interceptions, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and 22 passes defended in 2017.
Hayward was voted second-team All-Pro for the second consecutive season, perhaps underscoring another dominant campaign from the 28-year-old. Hayward has clearly emerged as one of the better cover corners since coming over from Green Bay in 2016, but he likely doesn't post enough consistent counting numbers to be a reliable IDP asset in shallow leagues.
Hayward had two solo tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery Sunday against the Jets.
Hayward has posted over three tackles in a game just three times through 15 outings this season, so he relies on other forms of contribution to boost his stat line. This was his first forced fumble since the 2012 season, but he has now reached 20 pass breakups for the second consecutive season, and he's one shy of matching his career high.
