Hayward finished the 2018 campaign with 46 tackles (41 solo) and eight pass deflections across 16 games.
More notably, Hayward did not record a single interception all season, marking only the third time in his seven-year career and first time with the Chargers he's failed to pick off a pass during a given campaign. While the 29-year-old certainly would have liked to record more turnovers, it's difficult to do that when the opponent isn't throwing the ball near him, as opposing QBs attempted just 63 passes to Hayward's side of the field in 2018. Part of a deep and talented secondary, Hayward shouldn't be on many people's radars in terms of fantasy next season, but his role as a shutdown corner is invaluable to the likes of Desmond King, Derwin James and Adrian Phillips who all thrived in their respective roles this year.
Hayward (hamstring) didn't play in Saturday's preseason loss to the Saints, Jack Wang of the Los Angeles Daily News reports.
Hayward wasn't expected to play Saturday after injuring his hamstring earlier in the week, but the All-Pro cornerback will likely be ready for the official start of the 2018 campaign against the Chiefs in two weeks. Arguably one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, Hayward's reputation makes him an unreliable IDP candidate if only because team's tend to avoid throwing in the 28-year-old's direction.
Hayward left Tuesday's practice with an apparent hamstring injury, Eric D. Williams of ESPN.com reports.
While covering teammate Mike Williams on a go route, Hayward pulled up and grabbed at his hamstring. Since signing with the Chargers during the 2016 offseason, Hayward has put together back-to-back second-team All-Pro campaigns, accumulating 98 tackles and 11 interceptions without missing a game. Due to his prowess as an IDP, this potential injury could hinder his prospects to begin the regular season.
Hayward (hip) recorded two tackles and one pass deflection in Friday's preseason game against the Seahawks.
Hayward, who was battling a hip issue earlier in the offseason, was healthy for all of training camp and has been on the field for the preseason. After putting together a career-best campaign in 2017, Hayward is set to start at cornerback yet again for the Chargers in 2018.
Hayward remained sidelined for the second day of mandatory minicamp Wednesday due to a hip injury, Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Hayward has displayed his ball-hawking abilities the past two seasons, racking up four interceptions last year to back up a seven-pick campaign in 2016. While his offseason will be temporarily put on hold as he deals with some soreness, there's nothing at this point to suggest the issue will leak into the regular season.
