Bell was claimed by the Vikings on Sunday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
A recent string of injuries led the Vikings in search of another tight end. Kyle Rudolph (leg) should be fine for the season opener, but Bell provides the team with an emergency body should he be needed.
Bell was waived by the 49ers Saturday, Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee reports.
Bell was unable to beat out the other 49ers tight ends for a spot on the roster. He would have been a depth option had he made the team, however, with George Kittle and Logan Paulsen seemingly in line for the No. 1 and No. 2 spots respectively.
Bell pulled in the only pass thrown his way for 10 yards in Saturday's preseason loss to the Broncos.
It was the Bell's first reception and target of the preseason. The converted quarterback is currently in a six-man competition for -- presumably -- three tight end spots on the 53-man roster. The 26-year-old is currently behind training camp standout Vance McDonald and rookie George Kittle in terms of receiving tight ends, and his unpolished blocking skills places him behind seasoned vets Logan Paulsen and Garrett Celek. Barring injuries or a big swing in production, Bell could be on the outside looking in when it is time for rosters to be trimmed down.
The former quarterback was drafted as a developmental project in 2015, but his lack of production over the last two seasons puts him in a questionable position as the team moves towards training camp July 27. Bell has the size (6-foot-6, 255 pounds) to profile as a prominent red-zone threat, but with plenty of competition in camp, he will have to display progress in his development to make the cut.
Bell (head) didn't participate in Wednesday's minicamp practice due to a forehead laceration, CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reports.
The injury sounds very minor in nature, so it doesn't figure to delay Bell much in his offseason preparation. Barring any additions at tight end during the 2017 NFL Draft, Bell will enter the summer as the 49ers' No. 4 tight end behind Vance McDonald, Garrett Celek and Logan Paulsen.
