Falcons' Matt Simms: Lands on IR
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Simms (undisclosed) was placed on injured reserve by the Falcons on Sunday.

Simms was likely to be beaten out by Matt Schaub for the backup quarterback role anyway, but his injury sealed the deal. Since he was placed on injured reserve before the season began, Simms won't play in the 2019 season.

Falcons' Matt Simms: Sits out final two preseason games
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Simms (undisclosed) missed Atlanta's last two preseason games with an injury, Kelsey Conway of the Falcons' official site reports.

The 30-year-old Simms rejoined the Falcons after Kurt Benkert suffered a toe injury in the Hall of Fame Game and made exhibition appearances against the Dolphins and Jets before being saddled with an injury of his own. The nature and severity of the issue has yet to be revealed, but Simms's absence does not bode well for what began as a puncher's chance at a 53-man roster spot. If he's able to return soon, he is a candidate for a practice squad spot, though Danny Etling -- who's demonstrated impressive rushing ability and competent passing -- may offer higher upside for such a role.

Falcons' Matt Simms: Turnover issues apparent
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Simms completed nine of 19 attempts for 85 yards, committing one interception and losing two fumbles during Thursday's 22-10 loss to the Jets.

Playing against his former team -- the only franchise for which he's logged regular-season playing time -- Simms struggled throughout the second half of Thursday's exhibition as Atlanta dropped its 11th straight preseason contest. The 30-year-old signal caller was able to lead the Falcons into field-goal range on his second drive, but from there the offense's results on the subsequent five possessions were punt, fumble, punt, fumble, pick-six. Simms looks to bounce back in the "dress rehearsal" game Thursday against Washingotn.

Falcons' Matt Simms: Mixed bag in second-half relief
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Simms completed eight of 17 pass attempts for 86 yards, adding three rushes for 13 yards during Thursday's 34-27 loss to the Dolphins. He also fumbled once, but the loose ball was recovered by teammate Dieugot Joseph.

Former Falcons practice squad player and quarterback of the AAF's Atlanta Legends, Simms saw his first action in an NFL regular or preseason game since August 2017. During the 2017 exhibition slate for the Falcons, Simms posted a 57.1 percent completion rate with 8.0 yards per attempt, one touchdown and one interception, but was cut before the start of the regular season and replaced by Kurt Benkert (toe) and Garrett Grayson as potential third-string options last summer. With Benkert having recently been placed on injured reserve, Simms has an opportunity to get some preseason reps with the Falcons, and potentially shoot for a backup job behind Matt Ryan and Matt Schaub with stellar performances over the next three weeks.

Falcons' Matt Simms: Returning to Atlanta

This will be Simms' third stint with the Falcons, after spending time with the club on two separate occasions in 2016 and 2017. The 30-year-old hasn't seen regular-season NFL action since completing three passes on eight attempts for 39 yards against the Chiefs while with the Jets in Week 9 of the 2014 season.

by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Simms (undisclosed) reverted back to the Falcons' injured reserve after being waived/injured Saturday, per the official NFL media site transaction log.

Matt Simms: Waived by Falcons
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Simms (undiscloed) was waived/injured by the Falcons on Saturday.

Simms was a top candidate to be Matt Ryan's backup at the beginning of the preseason, but this mystery ailment dwindled those chances when it became time to make cuts. He's expected to clear waivers and revert to injured reserve.

Falcons' Matt Simms: Receives extended look Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Simms completed 10 of 20 pass attempts for 104 yards in Thursday's 23-20 preseason loss to the Dolphins.

Matt Ryan played just one series in the preseason opener, and it was Simms who got the nod over Matt Schaub and Alek Torgersen for the majority of the snaps. Simms hasn't played a down in the NFL since the 2014 season, but perhaps the coaching staff sees something in him that has him in the early running for a role on the final roster.

Falcons' Matt Simms: Signs with Atlanta
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Simms signed a contract with the Falcons on Monday, D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Simms has spent time with the Falcons in the past, though he's never made the regular-season active roster. He'll attempt to make it out of training camp as Matt Ryan's backup, though he'll have to beat out veteran quarterback Matt Schaub for the spot.

Falcons' Matt Simms: Has solid preseason game
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Simms finished 10-for-13 for 136 yards and a touchdown in Thursday's preseason win over the Browns.

Simms is battling Matt Schaub for the right to back up Matt Ryan, but it will take more than one decent performance to supplant the veteran. His stat line is encouraging nonetheless.

Bills' Matt Simms: 'I wasn't getting my fair share' of reps with Jets
by R.J. White |

Bills quarterback Matt Simms confirmed Wednesday that he asked for his release from the Jets after not receiving enough practice time in OTAs, reports.

"You never want to quit a job when you don’t really know whether there is a job waiting for you," Simms said Wednesday, "But at the same time, I wasn’t happy, and you have to do what makes you happy, so I was willing to take that chance to be happy. I felt like I wasn’t getting my fair share of the reps and work. Today -- even though it was my first day -- I got more work today than I did my last week with the Jets. Yeah, it was risky, but in the end it paid off and I’m happy to be here now."

Coach Rex Ryan responded cautiously when asked if Simms would be added to a starting-quarterback competition that already involves three players.

"It is what it is right now, three guys are going to be working at it, they’re splitting the reps," Ryan said. "But don’t kid yourself. Matt will be given opportunities. Is he going to get as many as the top three guys? Probably not, but one thing about Matt, is I know he will take advantage of the opportunities he gets, and I’m not saying he can’t make this team."

QB Shuffle: Bills cut Jeff Tuel, claim Matt Simms off waivers
by Ruben Palacios | CBS Sports Staff

Bills coach Rex Ryan didn't pass up the chance to reunite with one of his former quarterbacks, by cutting Jeff Tuel and claiming the former Jets passer Matt Simms off waivers on Friday, per

Tuel was a favorite of former Bills coach Doug Marrone, but with Ryan now the head man in charge his fate was doomed.

Simms, who played in just four games while with the Jets, will still be a long-shot to make the team because of the three-man competition at the quarterback spot already brewing between Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel.

Report: QB Matt Simms asked for release from Jets
by Marty Gitlin |

Third-year quarterback Matt Simms asked for his release from the Jets on Thursday, a source close to the situation told The Record.

Simms, who had no comment when reached, apparently saw little future with that team when it selected Bryce Petty in the draft. He wanted to test the free agent market before mandatory minicamps began in June. If he clears waivers, he can sign with any team.

The 26-year-old Simms has played in just four career games with a poor 48.7 completion rate.

Todd Bowles: Jets planning to add another quarterback
by Jason Butt |

Jets coach Todd Bowles is a fan of competition.

Instead of being content with quarterbacks Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Matt Simms competing for the starting job, Bowles, via the Newark Star-Ledger, said the team has plans to add a fourth signal caller to the mix

Bowles said this on a conference call with season-ticket holders.

"Ryan's going to compete, as well as Geno's going to compete," Bowles said. "And we hope to add somebody else to help compete with that along with Simms."

That could mean many things, such as adding a veteran quarterback, a mid-to-late-rounder or someone looking to get back in the league. Or perhaps it's a sign the Jets want to take a quarterback — possibly Marcus Mariota — with the sixth overall pick if the opportunity arises.

Ryan Fitzpatrick says he'll be ready for training camp
by Larry Hartstein |

Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who's coming back from a broken leg, said he'll be limited in OTAs but fully ready for training camp, reports Geno Smith and Matt Simms will get more reps in OTAs, the report added.

Fitzpatrick is expected to start for the Jets after posting a 95.3 passer rating in 12 games with the Texans last season.
