Stars' Jani Hakanpaa: Secures deal with Dallas
Hakanpaa signed a three-year, $4.5 million contract with the Stars on Thursday.
Hakanpaa drew into 57 games split between the Ducks and Hurricanes last season, picking up four points, a plus-4 rating, 54 shots, 83 blocks, a whopping 215 hits -- good for third most in the league -- while averaging 18:01 of ice time per contest. The 6-foot-5 Finn will likely primarily skate on Dallas' bottom pairing in 2021-22, but he'll be able to slide into the top four if and when injuries strike. Nonetheless, Hakanpaa's complete lack of offensive upside will keep him off the radar in most fantasy formats.... See More ... See Less
Hurricanes' Jani Hakanpaa: Notches shorthanded helper
Hakanpaa recorded a shorthanded assist and two hits in Thursday's 2-1 overtime loss to the Blackhawks.
Hakanpaa got the puck up to Martin Necas for a breakaway goal. The 29-year-old Hakanpaa remains primarily a defensive presence, but he has picked up three of his four points this season in 13 games since he was traded to the Hurricanes from the Ducks. The Finnish blueliner has added 53 shots on net, 35 PIM, 81 blocked shots and 214 hits in 55 outings overall.... See More ... See Less
Hurricanes' Jani Hakanpaa: Forces OT with late blast
Hakanpaa scored a goal on his only shot and added a pair of hits in a 4-3 overtime loss to Dallas on Monday.
Hakanpaa stepped into a one-timer high in the Dallas zone and blew it past Jake Oettinger to tie the game at 3-3 with just over four minutes remaining in regulation. It was the second goal in seven games with Carolina for the 29-year-old Hakanpaa, who was acquired from Anaheim at the trade deadline. He had just one assist and 31 PIM in 42 games with the Ducks prior to the trade.... See More ... See Less
Hurricanes' Jani Hakanpaa: Strong all-around effort
Hakanpaa scored a goal on four shots and had two PIM in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Predators. He also had four hits and four blocks.
Skating on Carolina's third defensive pairing with Jake Bean, Hakanpaa certainly made the most of his 14:23 of ice time. The recent acquisition from Anaheim beat Juuse Saros with a point shot to put the Hurricanes ahead 2-1 midway through the third period, his first goal of the year and just his second in 49 NHL games. Hakanpaa also led the team in blocks and tied for the team high in hits, a fine night for the depth defenseman.... See More ... See Less
Hurricanes' Jani Hakanpaa: Swapped for Haydn Fleury
The Hurricanes acquired Hakanpaa and a 2022 sixth-round pick via trade from the Ducks for Haydn Fleury on Monday, Elliott Teaford of The Orange County Register reports.
After making his NHL debut late last season, Hakanpaa became a full-time NHLer with the Ducks this year, suiting up in all 42 games and producing just one point and 168 hits. The 29-year-old will add depth for the Hurricanes, but he projects as a bottom-pairing defenseman that brings some grit to the contenders' blue line. The Thursday matchup against the Predators will be his first opportunity to make his Hurricanes debut.... See More ... See Less
Ducks' Jani Hakanpaa: Still stuck on one point
Hakanpaa hasn't recorded a point in his last 17 games.
Hakanpaa has done very little on the scoresheet in 2020-21, with just one assist through 37 games. The 28-year-old blueliner has added 155 hits -- ranking third in the league -- and 55 blocked shots. The Finn also won his first career faceoff Monday, taking a draw when the Avalanche had a two-man advantage in the third period. Fantasy managers need not consider Hakanpaa for their virtual rosters.... See More ... See Less
Ducks' Jani Hakanpaa: Gets on scoresheet with helper
Hakanpaa recorded an assist and four hits in Wednesday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Coyotes.
Hakanpaa's shot created a rebound, which Maxime Comtois finished with a between-the-legs backhand late in the first period. The 28-year-old Hakanpaa picked up his first point in 20 games this year with the assist. The Finn has added 68 hits, 38 blocked shots and a plus-3 rating in an almost purely defensive role. Don't let the top-four usage fool you -- there's very little offense in Hakanpaa's play.... See More ... See Less
Ducks' Jani Hakanpaa: Offense nonexistent
Hakanpaa has no points in 15 games this season.
Hakanpaa had just one goal in five appearances for the Ducks last year, but his offense hasn't shown up at all in 2020-21. The 28-year-old Finn has supplied 47 hits and 33 blocked shots this season, but that's not going to be enough to get him onto the fantasy radar. Hakanpaa has typically worked in a bottom-four role with his average ice time at 18:12 per game. He's nearly a pure defensive player with virtually no offensive upside.... See More ... See Less
Ducks' Jani Hakanpaa: Snares one-year extension
The Ducks extended Hakanpaa's contract Wednesday for one-year at $750,000, Eric Stephens of The Athletic reports.
Hakanpaa may sport a little upside should he stick around at the top level, but he's unlikely to be a mainstay on fantasy rosters in 2020-21.... See More ... See Less
Ducks' Jani Hakanpaa: Ushered to AHL
The Ducks demoted Hakanpaa to AHL San Diego on Monday.
Hakanpaa suited up for his first five NHL games earlier this month, scoring his first goal March 11. The 27-year-old has 13 points in 47 AHL contests this season.... See More ... See Less
Ducks' Jani Hakanpaa: Gets first career goal
Hakanpaa scored a goal, dished four hits, blocked two shots and added two PIM in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the Blues.
Hakanpaa, a 2010 fourth-round draft pick, earned his first NHL goal against the team that drafted him. It's also his first career point. The Finn has posted 15 hits, seven blocked shots and a plus-1 rating in five games as he's filled in on a Ducks blue line decimated by injuries.... See More ... See Less
Ducks' Jani Hakanpaa: Recalled by Ducks
The Ducks recalled Hakanpaa from AHL San Diego on Sunday, Elliott Teaford of The Orange County Register reports.
The 27-year-old defenseman has spent the entire season in the AHL, but he'll add to the Ducks' blue-line depth because Hampus Lindholm (upper body) isn't expected to play Sunday versus the Devils. Hakanpaa will likely be demoted once his fellow defensemen get healthy again.... See More ... See Less
Ducks' Jani Hakanpaa: Returning to North America
Hakanpaa agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Anaheim on Wednesday.
Hakanpaa spent the past three seasons playing in Sweden for Karpat, including a 2018-19 campaign in which he recorded 11 goals and 12 helpers in 52 contests. The 27-year-old last played in North America back in 2014-15, when he was with AHL Chicago as part of the Blues organization. The blueliner should have an inside track on a spot in the lineup for Opening Night versus Arizona on Oct. 3.... See More ... See Less
