Manager Derek Shelton said Wednesday that Kela has yet to see the field at Pirates' summer training for unspecified reasons, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.

The 27-year-old is expected to open the season as the team's closer, but he's been absent for the early stages of camp. The lack of explanation could mean his absence is related to the COVID-19 pandemic, since teams aren't legally permitted to discuss related matters without a player's permission. It's unclear when Kela will be able to join his teammates, but his availability for the start of the season could come into question with just over two weeks until Opening Day.
