Oviedo was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Thursday.
Oviedo began the year on the injured list with an ankle injury and was optioned to Double-A Altoona when he was activated from the shelf on Monday. The 22-year-old has made three appearances (two starts) in the minors this year and has allowed a run in 2.2 innings. If he goes unclaimed on waivers, he'll presumably remain in the organization.
