  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Out of Boston's lineup

Anthony is absent from the lineup for Friday's game in St. Louis.

Anthony is slashing only .217/.308/.348 in the early going and has also had throwing issues on days he's played the outfield. He'll begin Friday's contest on the bench while Jarren Duran handles left field and Masataka Yoshida occupies the designated hitter slot.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Early throwing issues

Anthony had three instances of poor throws from left field early in the regular season which have been a topic of discussion, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Anthony had two throws to home plate during the team's season-opening road trip which were not close, including one that arrived on multiple bounces. He followed up with an offline throw to third base Monday that led to two runs in an 8-6 loss. Both manager Alex Cora and third base coach Kyle Hudson, who was an outfielder during his tenure as a player in the majors and minors, believe the issue revolves around Anthony's lower-half mechanics. Hudson indicated the arm strength is there, but improper mechanics puts him in a tough position to maximize the strength. Anthony served as the DH on Tuesday, and his throwing issues aren't going to cost him plate appearances; however, as Cora manages playing time for five worthy outfielders, limiting Anthony to DH reduces roster flexibility. It's unclear when he'll return to the outfield, but when he does, teams are expected to challenge Anthony's arm.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Triples in loss to San Diego

Anthony went 2-for-4 with a triple in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Padres.

After being stuck in a 1-for-17 slump earlier this week, Anthony is 4-for-9 with a solo home run, triple and one run scored over his last three appearances. Boston's offense as a whole continues to struggle, as the Red Sox have scored two runs or fewer in four of their last six games. Through eight games, Anthony is slashing .267/.333/.433 across 33 plate appearances.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Homers off the bench

Anthony went 1-for-1 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 6-4 loss to the Astros.

After starting the game on the bench, Anthony came on as a pinch hitter in the top of the ninth and launched an opposite-field homer off a Bryan Abreu two-strike slider, his first long ball this season. While Boston's comeback bid would fall short, Anthony's homer is certainly a positive sign -- the outfielder had gone 0-for-12 with eight strikeouts in his previous three contests.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Sitting after four-strikeout game

Anthony is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

With an off day looming Thursday, Red Sox manager Alex Cora will hold the struggling Anthony out of the lineup Wednesday to effectively give the young outfielder two full days to clear his head. After donning the Golden Sombrero in Tuesday's 9-2 loss to Houston, Anthony has now gone hitless with eight strikeouts in 12 at-bats over his last three starts.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Fans four times in loss

Anthony went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in Tuesday's 9-2 loss to Houston.

After collecting three singles Opening Day, Anthony's bat has gone silent. Over four subsequent contests, he's gone 1-for-17 with a whopping 10 strikeouts. He's hardly the lone member of the team struggling, but Anthony carries a high profile as Boston's leadoff hitter who signed an eight-year contract extension in August of 2025. The top four spots in the Red Sox's order are batting a combined .156 through five games.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: On base four times

Anthony batted leadoff and went 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored in Thursday's 3-0 victory over the Reds.

None of Anthony's three hits impacted the final score, but his ABS challenge in the top of the ninth inning turned a potential inning-ending strikeout into a walk. Two batters later, he came around to score as the Red Sox added two insurance runs. Anthony is expected to bat leadoff this season and could be among the league leaders in plate appearances.
