Padres' Ethan Salas: Batting sixth in major-league debut

Salas will start at catcher and bat sixth in his major-league debut Wednesday in Cincinnati.

Salas was among the Padres' September call-ups Tuesday and is set for his first start in the big leagues during Wednesday's series finale. The 20-year-old catcher has slashed .296/.374/.448 with 10 home runs, 17 stolen bases and a 47:58 BB:K over 96 games between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A El Paso this season. Salas is likely to see the bulk of the starts at catcher down the stretch for the Padres.

  • Austin Wells C | NYY

Yankees' Austin Wells: Records steal in win

Wells went 1-for-3 with a stolen base in Tuesday's 7-3 win over the Angels.

Wells has gone 4-for-12 with seven RBI over his last four contests. The steal is more of a rarity -- he has three thefts this year, and this one was his first since Aug. 8. The catcher is batting just .184 with a .588 OPS, 10 home runs, 26 RBI, 29 runs scored and seven doubles across 328 plate appearances.

  • Ryan Jeffers C | MIN

Twins' Ryan Jeffers: Homers again Tuesday

Jeffers went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and a triple in Tuesday's 15-2 rout of the Tigers.

Jeffers recorded his second triple of the season in his first plate appearance before taking Kyle Finnegan deep for a three-run homer in the sixth, his second trip to the plate during Minnesota's 10-run frame. He's now homered three times over his last two games after going 24 consecutive contests without leaving the yard. Jeffers is enjoying a strong season, slashing .278/.381/.510 with 13 homers, 16 doubles, two triples, 49 RBI, 46 runs and one steal across 75 games.

  • Braves' Drake Baldwin: Extends hitting streak to nine games

Baldwin went 1-for-4 with an RBI double during Tuesday's 9-5 loss to Washington.

Baldwin cut Atlanta's deficit to 4-2 with an RBI double in the third inning. That double extended Baldwin's hitting streak to nine games, during which he has gone 15-for-38 (.395) with two home runs, six RBI and four doubles. His .813 OPS across 513 plate appearances is fourth-best among qualified catchers behind Hunter Goodman, Gabriel Moreno and Liam Hicks.

  • Guardians' Patrick Bailey: Homers against Toronto

Bailey went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run during the Guardians' 6-1 win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday.

Bailey put the Guardians on the board with a two-run homer off Spencer Arrighetti in the fifth inning. It was Bailey's second home run as a member of the Guardians and his fourth multi-hit game over his last seven outings, during which he has gone 8-for-18 with seven RBI and three extra-base hits.

  • Liam Hicks C | TB

Rays' Liam Hicks: On bench vs. lefty

Hicks is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mets.

It's the third straight game against a southpaw starter that Hicks isn't starting, so he appears to be working in the strong side of a platoon at catcher. The 27-year-old has raked in 22 games since being acquired by the Rays at the trade deadline with three homers and a .947 OPS in 80 plate appearances. Nick Fortes is picking up another start behind the plate Tuesday versus New York lefty Sean Manaea.

  • Zach Morgan C | SF

Giants' Zach Morgan: Rejoining big club

The Giants recalled Morgan from Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Morgan was up with the Giants for a day Aug. 10 but was sent back down the next day. After getting sent back down, he got three hits in 21 at-bats with two RBI in seven games for Triple-A Sacramento. The 26-year-old is getting recalled Tuesday as rosters expand in September.

  • Bo Naylor C | MIL

Brewers' Bo Naylor: Up as third catcher

The Brewers recalled Naylor from Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday.

Most teams like to carry a third catcher when rosters expand in September, and that's what Naylor's role will be. He's unlikely to play much, barring injury.

  • Dodgers' Dalton Rushing: Activated to serve as bench bat

The Dodgers reinstated Rushing (elbow) from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, with manager Dave Roberts indicating that the 25-year-old will work as a left-handed bench bat, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

Rushing landed on the shelf with a UCL tear in his right elbow in early August and isn't expected to catch again this season, but the Dodgers are bringing him back to the active roster due to his lefty bat. Will Smith (neck), who was also activated off the injured list Tuesday, and Hunter Feduccia will handle the catching duties for Los Angeles.

  • Will Smith C | LAD

Dodgers' Will Smith: Returns from injured list

The Dodgers reinstated Smith (neck) from the 60-day injured list Tuesday.

Smith is ready to rejoin the Dodgers after missing nearly three months due to a neck injury. The veteran backstop went 4-for-16 with two doubles and a homer during his five-game rehab assignment and is looking to shake off an underwhelming start to the year that saw him post a .720 OPS through 52 games. Dalton Rushing (elbow) is also back from the injured list, though he's expected to served as a left-handed bench bat while Smith and Hunter Feduccia handle catching duties.
