Palmer secured the Chargers' No. 3 receiver role after the team waived Tyron Johnson on Tuesday, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.

Given the big-play ability Johnson's displayed last season, the Chargers' decision to cut him is somewhat surprising. Jalen Guyton (leg) is still around as a downfield option -- a useful asset to have considering the team's top two wideouts, Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, are far from burners -- but it's clear the Chargers likes Palmer as an intermediate threat. The rookie's role in what should be an explosive offense will be something to monitor in the team's opener Sept. 12 against Washington.
