The Maple Leafs released Gillies from his PTO on Thursday.
The 30-year-old netminder did not see any action in preseason games with the Maple Leafs. Gillies did not play at any level last season. He was sent to AHL Toronto, but he could be released at some point as the Marlies have depth in net at this time.
