Diamondbacks Right-hander Ian Kennedy has been scratched from Monday's start with a cut on his right index finger, manager Kirk Gibson told reporters on Sunday. He suffered the cut while cleaning dishes recently.
Kennedy, 28, has gone 2-3 with a 4.70 ERA in 10 starts this year. Two seasons ago, he went 21-4 with a 2.88 ERA, earning him a fourth-place finish in the NL Cy Young award voting. Arizona acquired him from the Yankees as part of the three-team, Curtis Granderson/Austin Jackson/Max Scherzer trade that also included the Tigers during the 2009-10 offseason.
The D-Backs will call-up left-hander Tyler Skaggs to start game one of Monday's doubleheader in Kennedy's place while Trevor Cahill will start the other game. Kennedy is expected to return to the rotation on Friday. The 21-year-old Skaggs is 4-5 with a 5.23 ERA in nine Triple-A starts this year.
In case you're wondering, Kennedy will earn $4.265 million this year and has banked more than $8.9 million since turning pro. No dishwasher? Really?
