Rockies put two chalk outlines on base path where Eddie Butler fell
Butler, a rookie pitcher, fell twice trying to score in the fifth inning Friday night. Once rounding third and again, a few steps later, between third and home. His trip(s) have been memorialized at Coors Field.
Colorado Rockies rookie pitcher Eddie Butler died twice Friday night. Figuratively, of course -- but he died, all right. And his teammates have memorialized his unfortunate trip(s) around the bases at Coors Field with two chalk outlines where Butler fell before he was tagged out at the plate.
Butler was trying to score from second base after a double to the right-field corner by DJ LeMahieu in the bottom of the fifth. Everything was going according to plan until Butler, who has 48 plate appearances as a professional ballplayer since 2012, slipped rounding third base. Oof! Oh, well, it happens.

A few steps later, it happened again.

Down goes Butler! Oof! That doesn't happen a lot. He was a dead duck at the plate. The Rockies could have scored two; they were lucky it wasn't a double play, with Charlie Blackmon having to pump the brakes in Butler's wake.
All's well that ends well, right? Because the Rockies beat the Reds 6-5 anyway. A day later, however, somebody had altered the infield dirt at Coors in order to reflect Butler's pathetic-looking demise.

Very funny, guys. It will be OK for Butler once the grounds crew erases the extra chalk for the next game in Colorado's series against the Rockies on Saturday. But his trippy trip won't soon be soon be forgotten.
