  • Nationals' Rafael Martin: Designated for assignment

Martin was designated for assignment on Monday, Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post reports.

He was the casualty when the Nationals needed to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for Ryan Raburn, who was promoted to the big leagues. Martin has a 5.18 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 21 strikeouts in 20 relief appearances for Triple-A Syracuse this season.

  • Nationals' Rafael Martin: Optioned to Triple-A

Martin was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday, MASN's Mark Zuckerman reports.

He was a long shot to make the 25-man roster, and he will indeed head to the minors to serve as organizational depth. Martin has a 4.50 ERA over 16 career MLB innings, most of which came in 2015. His strikeout rates have been impressive at every stop, but he appears destined for a low-leverage role if he joins the big league club at some point in 2017.

  • Nationals' Rafael Martin: Long shot to win bullpen role this spring

Martin will compete for a spot in the Nationals' bullpen this spring.

The 32-year-old has spent the last two seasons bouncing back and forth between Washington and Triple-A Syracuse, and while his minor league K-rate has been good, it come with sometimes shaky control and a sub-90 mph fastball. That's not a combination built for success in the majors, so expect Martin to begin the 2017 season back in the minors, where he'll continue providing depth when injuries hit the Nats' staff.

  • Nationals' Rafael Martin: Recalled from Triple-A

Martin was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Friday.

Martin averaged a strikeout per frame in 50 appearances with Syracuse this season but he was done in by walks (4.56 ERA, 4.6 BB/9). Simply put, the 32-year-old does not have the stuff to separate himself from the middle innings pack.

  • Nationals' Rafael Martin: Back from Syracuse

Martin was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Monday, Mark Zuckerman of MASN reports.

Martin will come up to provide bullpen insurance Monday night, but the belief is that it could only be a one-day stint with the big league club. The Nationals still need to recall a starter to take the hill Tuesday night, so Martin would seem to be the obvious roster casualty when that move is made.

Martin was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Monday.

Martin spent the bulk of 2015 at the Triple-A level, posting a 3.27 ERA and 0.985 WHIP across 66.0 innings. He also made 13 appearances for the Nationals, in which he went 2-0 with a 5.11 ERA (12.1 innings). The 31-year-old figures to have a decent chance of earning his way back to the major league bullpen at some point later in the year.
