UFC 211 results: Joanna Jedrzejczyk dominates Jessica Andrade to retain title
The champ showed why she's one of the best fighters in MMA and maybe best ever
If the performance of UFC strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk on Saturday wasn't enough to convince you that there may not be another woman in the world capable of capturing her 115-pound title, her postfight promo was a firm reminder.
"I'm thankful to the God that there's only one strawweight champion in the world and that's me -- Joanna Jedrzejczyk from Poland," said an emotional Jedrzejczyk. "Remember that! No one is taking this belt from me. No one. Nobody."
Jedrzejczyk (14-0) not only further cemented her claim as the top female pound-for-pound fighter in the world at UFC 211, she continued to fuel the idea that she could end up being the best that the UFC has ever seen. Her performance in dominating hard-nosed Jessica Andrade by unanimous decision (50-45, 50-44, 50-45) did little to dissuade the idea.
In yet another clinical outpointing of a top contender, Jedrzejczyk, 29, made the fifth defense of her strawweight title, moving her within one of tying Ronda Rousey's record for UFC title defenses by a female fighter.
Jedrzejczyk shook off early damage in the opening round from the heavy-handed Andrade, who landed a pair of hooks to the face and created swelling above the champion's right eye. From that point forward, it was all Jedrzejczyk, who constantly mixed up her striking attack in almost surgical fashion.
The native of Poland was accurate and controlled distance perfectly with her jab. She also forced a relentless Andrade to switch stances by creating bad swelling in two spots on her lead left leg with constant kicks.
Jedrzejczyk landed more than 40 strikes in all five rounds. But that never deferred Andrade, a native of Brazil, from constantly coming forward.
"Jessica is such a tough opponent. She drops from 135 and she has some amazing fights at 115," Jedrzejczyk said. "I think she was the right person to be a challenger.
"It was a tough fight and I've had tough fights like this when someone is making too much pressure. I was very tired in the end."
After the fight, Andrade (16-6) proposed inside the cage to her girlfriend Fernanda.
"I came here to be champ but I'm still early in my career," the 25-year-old Andrade said.
