  • Timberwolves' Karl-Anthony Towns: Remains out Thursday

Towns (illness) won't play in Thursday's preseason game against the Lakers, Alan Horton of the Timberwolves Radio Network reports.

Towns is still recovering from a throat infection that caused him to be hospitalized during camp, so he won't take the floor for Thursday's preseason tilt with the Lakers. It seems unlikely that Towns will play in the Wolves' next preseason game Sunday against the Clippers, but he should be available for the start of the regular season Oct. 19.

  • Timberwolves' Karl-Anthony Towns: Illness required hospitalization

Towns was hospitalized during the first week of training camp due to a throat infection that caused labored breathing, Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com reports.

Per Windhorst, Towns told the media Monday that the illness caused him to lose almost 15 pounds, and he didn't get clearance to walk again until Saturday when he attended a team event. "I'm still recovering," Towns said. But, he added that he still believes he'll be ready for the season opener against the Thunder on Oct. 19, per Chris Hine of the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch said Towns (illness) won't play in Tuesday's preseason opener against the Heat, Dane Moore of BringMeTheNews.com reports.

Towns is still working his way back from a non-COVID illness that sidelined him to start training camp. The ailment isn't expected to hinder his availability for the start of the regular season, so it's likely safe to assume his absence Tuesday is simply precautionary.

  • Timberwolves' Karl-Anthony Towns: Dealing with illness ahead of camp

Towns missed media day on Monday due to a non-COVID illness, but Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly said it isn't expected to affect his availability for training camp, Jace Frederick of St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

After agreeing to a four-year supermax extension with the Timberwolves in June, Towns shouldn't have any limitations when camp opens Tuesday, despite not feeling well on media day. With the addition of Rudy Gobert to Minnesota's frontcourt, Towns should have an opportunity to expand his game in 2022-23, as he could have more flexibility to operate outside the paint than he's had in previous years. In 74 appearances last season, Towns averaged 24.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.1 blocks and 1.0 steals in 33.5 minutes per contest.
