Tony McDaniel: Released by Saints
McDaniel was released by the Saints on Wednesday, Herbie Teope of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
McDaniel was set to become an unrestricted free agent in March anyway, so it seems that New Orleans has simply given him assurance that the team doesn't plan on bringing him back for another season. The 33-year-old will thus get a head start in finding a new home for the 2018 campaign, assuming he wants to continue playing.

Saints' Tony McDaniel: Hits injured reserve
The Saints placed McDaniel on injured reserve Wednesday with an undisclosed injury, Herbie Teope of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
McDaniel played 12 of 74 defensive snaps in Sunday's wild-card victory over the Panthers, but the nature of the injury remains unclear. Defensive tackle Woodrow Hamilton was signed to the 53-man roster and should serve a reserve role on the defensive line.

Saints' Tony McDaniel: Heading to New Orleans
McDaniel signed a contract with the Saints on Wednesday, Herbie Teope of the The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
McDaniel was most recently with the 49ers, racking up five tackles, one forced fumble and one pass breakup in four games before being released in mid-November. He'll now increase the Saints' depth at defensive tackle in the wake of John Hughes' (elbow) placement on injured reserve.

McDaniel latched on with the Niners in mid-October and appeared in each of the team's past four games, finishing his tenure in San Francisco with five tackles, one PBU and one forced fumble.

49ers' Tony McDaniel: Signs with 49ers
McDaniel signed with the 49ers on Tuesday to fill the vacancy of Arik Armstead (hand), Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
McDaniel is 32 years old but only has 48 NFL starts on his record. He hasn't played since 2016, when he notched 43 tackles (20 solo) and three pass breakups in 16 games. McDaniel likely will slot into a reserve role, though, and shouldn't be seen as an IDP option at this time.

McDaniel sat out of practice Monday as well due to an undisclosed reason. At this point in time, there's nothing to indicate the 12-year-veteran is dealing with anything serious. It's more likely that the Saints are just letting the 32-year-old get back into the swing of things in order to ensure his health entering Week 1.

Saints' Tony McDaniel: Signs with Saints
McDaniel signed a contract with the Saints on Thursday, Marc Sessler of Around the NFL reports.
McDaniel had one of his best seasons in 2016, recording 43 tackles and three passes defensed while with the Seahawks. He'll likely compete with Tyeler Davison and David Onyemata for the top backup spot at defensive tackle, and he could even compete for a starting role if Nick Fairley (heart) is unable to play.
