Jaguars' Antonio Johnson: Won't play against Indianapolis
Johnson (ankle) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Colts.
Johnson injured his ankle against the Texans in Week 6, and despite the extra rest courtesy of the Week 7 bye, he was unable to participate in practice all week. Kaevon Merriweather figures to be the top candidate to start alongside Eric Murray at safety, although Rayuan Lane and Jalen Huskey could also see more defensive snaps. Johnson's next chance to play is Week 9 against the Ravens on Thursday.

Jaguars' Antonio Johnson: Yet to practice during Week 8 prep
Johnson (ankle) sat out practice both Wednesday and Thursday.
Johnson missed the second half of Jacksonville's Week 6 loss to Houston due to an ankle injury. The Jaguars were on bye last week, but the time off doesn't seem to have been enough for Johnson to have recovered. Given Johnson's consecutive missed practices to begin Week 8 prep, he's likely trending toward missing Sunday's matchup versus the Colts. If that's the case, Kaevon Merriweather may draw a start at safety.

Jaguars' Antonio Johnson: Unable to finish Sunday's game
Johnson (ankle) didn't return to second half of Sunday's 34-31 loss to the Texans, Brent Martineau of CBS 47 Jacksonville reports.
The Jaguars had listed Johnson as questionable to return after he left in the second quarter due to the ankle injury, but though he was spotted on the sideline in the second half, he never checked back into the contest. Kaevon Merriweather ended up serving as the primary replacement at safety for Johnson, who will have a Week 7 bye to recover from his injury before potentially returning to action Nov. 1 versus the Colts. Johnson accrued six tackles prior to his departure.

Johnson's pick-six came Week 18 against the Titans, a contest in which he totaled three solo tackles and one interception, which he returned for the first defensive touchdown of his career. The 2023 fifth-round pick will continue handling a significant rotational role in Jacksonville's secondary during Sunday's wild-card matchup against the Bills. Johnson started in the six games prior to Week 15, though he worked in a rotational role in the secondary behind starting safeties Eric Murray and Andrew Wingard. Johnson ended up playing more defensive snaps than the Jaguars' two starting safeties, and he closed Sunday's blowout win by picking off Brady Cook on a pass intended for Arian Smith late in the fourth quarter. It was Johnson's third interception of the season, which surpasses his total number of picks over the first two years of his NFL career. The 2023 fifth-rounder is up to 52 tackles (31 solo), including 2.0 sacks, and seven pass defenses through 14 regular-season games.

Johnson served as the Jaguars' top reserve safety in 2024 and saw plenty of playing time, logging 684 defensive snaps and eight starts across his 17 appearances. The Texas A&M product drastically improved his tackle total from his rookie season (17 to 73); however, he recorded fewer passes defended (three to two), interceptions (two to zero) and forced fumbles (one to zero) despite the increased playing time.
