The Falcons promoted Zimmer to the active roster Tuesday, Matthew Tabeek of the Falcons' official site reports.
The 26-year-old defensive tackle joined Atlanta's practice squad in early October after he was waived from the active roster. He will take the roster spot of Keith Tandy and will provide depth to Atlanta's defensive line.
Zimmer joined Atlanta's practice squad Thursday, Kelsey Conway of the team's official site reports.
The third-year man will get another shot to earn his way onto the 53-man roster after being waived in favor of Michael Bennett earlier this week. With Grady Jarrett (ankle) and Takkarist McKinley (groin) being injured and serving as key components of Atlanta's defensive line, the Falcons will add some depth with Zimmer, a player who made a positive impression during the preseason with eight tackles and 1.5 sacks.
Zimmer was waived by the Falcons on Tuesday.
Zimmer became an expendable piece following the team's decision to bring in Michael Bennett. Zimmer had struggled to carve out a distinctive role since signing with the team back in April.
Zimmer signed with the Falcons on Tuesday, Will McFadden of the Falcons' official site reports.
Zimmer has yet to make an NFL roster in the regular season but has spent portions of training camp with the Bills and Saints. He also spent part of the 2017 season with the CFL's Montreal Alouettes, where he logged three tackles and a sack in one contest.
