Penguins' Kasperi Kapanen: Secures two-year deal
Kapanen inked a two-year, $6.4 million contract with Pittsburgh on Thursday, Dave Molinari of DKPittsburghSports.com reports.
Kapanen is coming off a disappointing 2021-22 campaign in which he registered just 0.41 points per game, his lowest since coming into the league in 2017-18. Once thought to be a lock to play with Evgeni Malkin, the 25-year-old Kapanen's offensive struggles have seen him relegated to a third-line role. At this point, the winger should probably be considered a high-risk fantasy option given his inconsistency and lack of a clear top-six role.... See More ... See Less
Penguins' Kasperi Kapanen: Reaches 30-point threshold again
Kapanen hit the 30-point threshold for the fourth straight season, tallying 11 goals and 21 helpers in 79 games this year.
While Kapanen managed to hit that 30-point mark again, the season will likely still be considered a disappointment given the expectations of the winger possibly putting up 20 goals playing alongside some of Pittsburgh's talented centers. It's that perceived lack of offensive production that could see Kapanen walk during the upcoming free-agent period, though he is a restricted free agent and the Penguins will likely not want to lose him for nothing.... Penguins' Kasperi Kapanen: Chips in with assist
Kapanen logged an assist and two hits in Friday's 5-3 loss to the Rangers in Game 6.
Kapanen picked up his third assist of the series on Jeff Carter's first-period tally. Through six playoff outings, Kapanen has added 18 shots on net, 15 hits and a plus-4 rating. He's seen mainly middle-six minutes so far, so he shouldn't be expected to produce more than supplementary offense.... See More ... See Less
Penguins' Kasperi Kapanen: Absent from practice
Kapanen is under the weather and missed Monday's practice session, Pens Inside Scoop reports.
Kapanen was one of three Penguins' forwards dealing with a non-COVID-19 illness, which led to the team calling up Filip Hallander from the minors. If Kapanen isn't fit enough to play against the Avs on Tuesday, Radim Zohorna would likely slot into his place on the third line.... See More ... See Less
Penguins' Kasperi Kapanen: Playing Tuesday
Kapanen (illness) will be in the lineup versus Colorado on Tuesday, Wes Crosby of NHL.com reports.
Kapanen will avoid missing any game time after being unable to practice with the team Monday. After a rough 20-game goal stretch that included all of February, the 25-year-old Kapanen has registered two goals, two assists and 13 shots in his previous nine contests. Still, despite his recent uptick in form, Kapanen likely has lost his place in the top six, especially following the addition of Rickard Rakell.... See More ... See Less
Penguins' Kasperi Kapanen: First goal in 20 games
Kapanen scored a goal Saturday in a 4-1 win over the Coyotes.
He celebrated emphatically -- it was his first goal in 20 games dating to Jan. 23. Kapanen has a modest two-game, two-point streak on the go, so last week's healthy scratch must have made an impact.... See More ... See Less
Penguins' Kasperi Kapanen: Healthy scratch Friday
Kapanen is a healthy scratch against Vegas on Friday.
Kapanen has just two assists with a minus-6 rating over the last 17 games. The 25-year-old winger is shooting a career-low 8.9 percent and has slowly seen his playing time drop as the season progresses. Valtteri Puustinen will make his NHL debut on Pittsburgh's third line Friday.... See More ... See Less
Penguins' Kasperi Kapanen: Nets goal in win
Kapanen put up a goal in a 3-2 shootout win over the Jets on Sunday.
Kapanen scored the first goal of the game for the Penguins in this one, beating Connor Hellebuyck six minutes into the third period. The 25-year-old had not scored a goal since Jan. 8 against Dallas, though he did have five assists during that span. Kapanen is up to nine goals and 15 assists across 40 contests this season.... Penguins' Kasperi Kapanen: Dishes two assists in win
Kapanen notched a pair of assists and added four hits in Monday's 5-3 win over the Golden Knights.
Kapanen had a hand in both of Jason Zucker's goals in the game, one of which came on the power play. The 25-year-old Kapanen played a key role during the Penguins' six-game road trip, collecting a goal and five assists in that span. The Finnish winger is up to 22 points (four on the power play), 74 shots on net and 40 hits through 37 contests this season. Playing on the second line, Kapanen should have some modest fantasy appeal now that both of Evgeni Malkin and Zucker are healthy.... See More ... See Less
Penguins' Kasperi Kapanen: Provides pair of assists
Kapanen registered two assists and went plus-2 in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Ducks.
Kapanen's line with Evgeni Malkin and Jeff Carter combined for all four goals and seven points, with Kapanen assisting on the last two tallies of the game. The Finn has a modest-three game point streak, with a goal and two helpers in that span. The winger's at 20 points, 69 shots on net, 36 hits and a plus-7 rating through 34 outings overall. If this line stays together going forward, Kapanen could see a boost in fantasy value.... See More ... See Less
Penguins' Kasperi Kapanen: Clears virus protocols
Per Wes Crosby of NHL.com, Kapanen participated in Tuesday's practice, indicating he's cleared the NHL's COVID-19 protocols.
Kapanen is expected to return to a significant role following his one-game absence, skating on the Penguins' second line and second power-play unit Wednesday versus St. Louis. The 25-year-old winger has picked up 16 points through 30 games this campaign.... See More ... See Less

Kapanen entered the NHL's COVID-19 protocols Wednesday.

Penguins' Kasperi Kapanen: Pair of helpers in loss
Kapanen generated two assists in Saturday's 6-3 loss to the Canadiens.
Kapanen hasn't missed a game this season and the continuity has helped him garner five goals and five assists over the last month, a 15-game stretch. The Finn is rocking a 61.7 Corsi percentage, which goes to show that he's helping the Penguins dominate puck possession when he's on the ice.... See More ... See Less
Penguins' Kasperi Kapanen: Tallies lone goal in win
Kapanen scored a goal on three shots and added three hits in Friday's 1-0 win over the Islanders.
Kapanen tallied at 16:41 of the second period in what was an otherwise a goalie duel between the Islanders' Ilya Sorokin and the Penguins' Tristan Jarry. The goal was Kapanen's fifth of the year and his first game-winner. He's added seven helpers, 46 shots on net, 22 hits and a plus-5 rating through 20 contests.... See More ... See Less
Penguins' Kasperi Kapanen: Earns assist Thursday
Kapanen notched an assist in Thursday's 6-0 rout of Montreal.
Kapanen has struggled to produce with consistency this season, as he has scored in just six of his 16 appearances -- though three of those were multi-point efforts. The winger should continue to get opportunities with the Penguins' power play but may struggle to offer much fantasy value until Evgeni Malkin (knee) is cleared to return.... See More ... See Less
Penguins' Kasperi Kapanen: First NHL hat trick
Kapanen recorded a hat trick Saturday in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Wild.
It was his first NHL hattie (252 games) and his first goals of the season. Kapanen's first two goals came 2:31 apart in the first period. He knotted the game at 1-1 when he took a pass deep in the slot and tucked it around Cam Talbot's left pad. The second goal came on a one-timer. Kapanen's final goal came when he rang the left post and the puck then hit a Wild defender before crossing the goal line. The snipes snapped his four-game point slump and Kapanen now has seven points (three goals, four assists) in 10 games.... See More ... See Less
Penguins' Kasperi Kapanen: Two helpers in rout
Kapanen delivered two assists -- including a power-play helper -- in Saturday's 7-1 thrashing of the Maple Leafs.
Kapanen wasn't about to be left out of the scoring barrage against his former team, but there's still an itch needing to be scratched when it comes to the Finn. While Kapanen is currently on the top line and No. 1 power-play unit, he's only averaging 16:49 of ice time with 12 SOG through five contests. More assertiveness in the way of Kapanen shooting the puck will be required in order for him to ascend a few tiers in the fantasy realm.... See More ... See Less

The goal answered Brock Nelson's go-ahead tally from just 31 seconds earlier.
