Lernout signed a one-year contract with the Golden Knights on Monday.
Lernout wasn't tendered a qualifying offer by the Canadiens, so he'll hope that their loss becomes Vegas' gain. He's a right-shot defenseman with size (6-foot-4, 214 pounds) and physicality, though there's not much offensive upside for fantasy owners to tap into. In fact, Lernout has just one assist representing his point total over 21 career games at hockey's highest level.

Canadiens' Brett Lernout: Not given qualifying offer
Lernout was not qualified by the Canadiens prior to Tuesday's deadline, Eric Engels of Sportsnet.ca reports.
The 6-foot-4 blueliner will likely have a new home for the 2019-20 season after Montreal elected not to extend Lernout a qualifying offer. The 23-year-old collected nine points in 74 games with AHL Laval in 2018-19, failing to appear in an NHL game a season ago after playing 18 games for the Canadiens in 2017-18.

Lernout was placed on waviers by the Canadiens on Tuesday, Stu Cowan of the Montreal Gazette reports.
Lernout made a couple of trips from AHL Laval to Montreal last season, earning his first NHL point in 18 games. The Canadiens are set on the blue line, so this move does not come as a surprise. He'll end up at Laval if he clears waivers.

Lernout had one assist and dished out 56 hits in 18 NHL games this season, and he'll return to AHL Laval for the final two games of the season. AHL Laval is far from playoff contention, so they don't need Lernout's contributions as much as the 22-year-old blueliner needs to continue developing.

Canadiens' Brett Lernout: Registers first NHL point
Lernout had an assist, two blocked shots and a hit while finishing plus-2 over a season-high 19:08 of ice time in Wednesday's loss to the Penguins.
The game officially eliminated Montreal from postseason consideration, so it was good to see coach Claude Julien give Lernout a longer leash. He threw the 22-year-old out there for the penalty kill, and Lernout got his first NHL point on Nikita Scherbak's shorthanded goal. Lernout is a big-bodied defenseman who should get enhanced ice time for the rest of the season. He's a rare breed on the Canadiens, being one of four players on the positive side of the plus-minus category.

The Canadiens recalled Lernout from AHL Laval on Thursday.
Rinat Valiev left Thursday's 5-0 loss to the Panthers due to a lower-body injury, and David Schlemko was unavailable against Florida due to an upper-body injury, so Lernout will likely round out the Canadiens' depth at defense Saturday against Tampa Bay. The 2014 third-round pick has totaled one goal and eight points in 54 contests with AHL Laval this campaign.

Lernout was demoted back to AHL St. John's on Sunday.
Lernout was recalled on an emergency basis Thursday with the club shorthanded along the blue line and he saw significant ice time in Saturday's regular-season finale against the Red Wings. He tallied a shot on goal, three blocked shots and four hits in the contest, but the Canadiens will likely return some of their injured bodies during the playoffs. Lernout will instead head to AHL St. John's as the affiliate pursues a postseason bid as well.

Lernout (knee) impressed director of player development Martin Lapointe, who also coached the team, with his physical play during the NHL Rookie Tournament, Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette reports.
Lernout injured his knee during his NHL debut back in April. Prior to his debut, the 20-year-old defenseman lit the lamp two times and added 10 helpers in 69 games for AHL St. John's. Lernout is expected to begin the season in the minors after failing to receive an invite to NHL camp.

Lernout has been recalled from St. John's of the American Hockey League, the Montreal Gazette reports.
Lernout gets the recall from the AHL after Nathan Beaulieu suffered a season-ending thumb injury Thursday. The 20-year-old will be activated for Saturday's game against Florida, becoming the ninth member of the organization to make his NHL debut this season. He had two goals and 10 assists in 69 games with the IceCaps.
