Halftime: Syracuse 24, Clemson 14
If you were wondering whether it could get worse for Clemson, it could. After suffering a heartbreaking loss to Georgia Tech last weekend, the Tigers came out flat at home against Syracuse. Clemson's offense has been struggling in the early going, but the most alarming part of the team's performance so far today has been the defense.
On Syracuse's opening drive, the Orange drove 75 yards on seven plays and finished it off with a brilliant touchdown catch by receiver Justus Ross-Simmons.
That set the tone for the first half as the Tigers started on their back foot and never recovered. Their defense surrendered 303 yards (180 passing and 123 rushing) while the Orange picked up 6.5 yards per attempt on the ground. It was an uncharacteristically poor start for Dabo Swinney's defense, but Clemson has been outclassed in almost every area.
After that opening touchdown drive, the Orange caught the Tigers off guard with a perfect onside kick. Clemson was able to keep Syracuse out of the end zone that time, but the Orange still tacked on a field goal.
On offense, Cade Klubnik did look more comfortable as the first half progressed. He completed 15 of his 21 passing attempts for 152 yards and two touchdowns with most of that production coming on Clemson's final drive of the half.
Barring a second-half comeback, Clemson is staring down the barrel of its first 1-3 start since 2004. In order to pull that off, the Tigers will also have to break their streak of nine consecutive losses when trailing by 17 or more points at any point in a game.
If Clemson can't get things turned, the heat on Swinney will only increase. That said, the temperature of Swinney's seat may not get volcanic because of his enormous buyout.
