Smith was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Monday.
Smith had an outside chance at earning the final rotation spot for the Angels, but instead he finds himself headed to Triple-A Salt Lake to start the season. The 25-year-old posted a 4.61 ERA across 26 starts at Triple-A last season, so he'll likely have to show better results there before earning a call-up.
