Phillies' Jhailyn Ortiz: Protected from Rule 5 draft

Ortiz's contract was selected by the Phillies on Friday.

Ortiz won't be available for selection in the Rule 5 draft, but he still has some work to do before he earns his major-league debut. He hit a strong .262/.358/.521 in 74 games for High-A Jersey Shore last season but struggled in 21 games after a promotion to Double-A Reading, striking out in 30.7 percent of his plate appearances while slashing .208/.307/.377.
