  • Jake Burger 1B | TEX

Rangers' Jake Burger: Homers in loss

Burger went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Mariners.

Burger got the scoring started with a second-inning homer. It was the 26th blast of the season for the first baseman, who extended an on-base streak to six contests. He's gone 6-for-18 with seven walks, three home runs, five RBI and eight runs scored during the streak.

  • Dodgers' Freddie Freeman: Working through right knee issue

Freeman is working through a right knee injury that will keep him out of the Dodgers' starting lineup against the Reds on Wednesday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

Manager Dave Roberts relayed to reporters Wednesday that Freeman's knee issue was part of the reason why the veteran slugger served as the designated hitter Tuesday and will be on the bench for Wednesday's contest. Per Ardaya, Roberts responded that it is "absolutely not" a possibility that Freeman goes on the injured list, indicating that the injury is a day-to-day issue. With the Dodgers off Thursday, Freeman has a good shot at returning to the lineup for Friday's series opener against the Marlins. Enrique Hernandez will start at first base Wednesday, and with Shohei Ohtani (biceps/knee/neck) sidelined, Will Smith will serve as the Dodgers' designated hitter.

  • Dodgers' Freddie Freeman: Idle Wednesday

Freeman is not in the Dodgers' starting lineup against the Reds on Wednesday, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports.

Freeman will get a day off after going 0-for-7 with a walk, a run scored and three strikeouts over the first two games of the series. With Shohei Ohtani (biceps/knee/neck) also sidelined, Will Smith will serve as the designated hitter while Enrique Hernandez starts at first base.

  • Red Sox's Willson Contreras: Beginning assignment Friday

Contreras (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment at Double-A Portland on Friday, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.

Contreras took batting practice on the field before Tuesday's game against the Angels as the latest step in his recovery from a left hamstring strain. He'd been a candidate to return from the injured list for Friday's series opener against the Royals, but the Sox will instead have him play in a few tune-up games before adding him back to the active roster.

  • Jake Bauers 1B | MIL

Brewers' Jake Bauers: Remains out of action

Bauers (shins) remains out of the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Cubs.

It's the third straight day out of the lineup for Bauers, who has been dealing with shin splints dating back several weeks. He will attempt to return to the lineup for Friday's contest against the Reds. Andrew Vaughn is at first base, and Luis Lara will handle right field for the Brewers in the series finale.

  • Abimelec Ortiz 1B | WAS

Nationals' Abimelec Ortiz: Out of lineup against righty

Ortiz is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Padres.

Righty Walker Buehler will be on the bump for the Padres, marking a rare occasion in which the left-handed-hitting Ortiz is not starting against a right-handed hurler. Yohandy Morales will play first base and will bat fifth for the Nationals.

  • Giants' Rafael Devers: Getting first day off this season

Devers is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals.

It's the first day off this season for the red-hot Devers, who is 11-for-30 with five home runs in his first eight contests this month. Bryce Eldridge will handle first base, while Turner Hill will grab a start at designated hitter as the Giants try to complete a series sweep.

  • Pirates' Spencer Horwitz: Plates three runs Tuesday

Horwitz went 3-for-5 with three RBI in Tuesday's 9-3 win over the White Sox.

Horwitz was unstoppable at the plate and contributed three of the Pirates' nine runs. He's been slumping in recent days, however, as he's hitting just .222 with a .522 OPS since the beginning of September.

  • Tigers' Spencer Torkelson: Playing time trending down

Torkelson is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Twins.

It's the third time over the last four games that Torkelson has been out of the lineup, and against right-handers he's sat out four of the past five. Across his last 70 plate appearances, Torkelson is just 8-for-62 (.129) with a 40 percent strikeout rate. Colt Keith is getting another start at first base, and he could remain the preferred option at the position versus right-handed pitching down the stretch.

  • Astros' Christian Walker: Launches 25th homer

Walker went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer in Tuesday's 6-5 win over the Phillies.

Walker opened the scoring in the second inning with a three-run, 440-foot blast off Andrew Painter, his 25th long ball this season. The homer was Walker's first in 11 games -- he'd gone just 5-for-34 with a .363 OPS across 10 contests coming into the day. Overall, the veteran first baseman is slashing .230/.305/.429 across 571 plate appearances this year with 80 RBI and 65 runs scored.
