Pirates' Oneil Cruz: No timeline to return

General manager Ben Cherington said that there is no timeline for Cruz (hand) to return from the injured list, Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Cruz was cleared for all baseball activities July 29, seemingly paving the way for him to return from the 60-day injured list Aug. 7. However, Cherington only made a vague statement that Cruz is making progress and on track, with the hope that he returns to games soon. While it sounds like Cruz is still nearing activation, that may not occur until closer to mid-August.

  • Derek Hill CF | PHI

Phillies' Derek Hill: Battling bruised shoulder

Hill was diagnosed with a shoulder contusion following his removal from Wednesday's game against the Nationals, Lochlahn March of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Hill collided with the center-field wall while trying to make a diving catch in the 11th inning. His shoulder appears to have taken most of the damage, though interim manager Don Mattingly said after the game that the team still has some tests to run on Hill and will know more about his health before Thursday's series finale versus Washington.

  • Brewers' Garrett Mitchell: Two swipes in win

Mitchell went 0-for-2 with two walks, two stolen bases and one run scored in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Pirates.

Mitchell is still hitless in August, going 0-for-15 with four walks, eight strikeouts and three steals over five games this month. The outfielder is now 11-for-16 on the basepaths this season. His recent slump has him down to a .257 average and .773 OPS, and he's added eight home runs, 49 RBI, 49 runs scored, 23 doubles and three triples over 103 contests. Mitchell continues to work primarily in a strong-side platoon role, though his playing time has been steady lately since the Brewers have faced just three left-handed starters (one being an opener) since the All-Star break.

Phillies' Derek Hill: Collides with wall, exits game

Hill was removed from Wednesday's game against the Nationals after colliding with the outfield wall, Lochlahn March of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Hill leaped headfirst into the fence in center field while trying to make a catch in the 11th inning. After remaining on the ground for a few minutes, he was able to walk off the field under his own power. He'll presumably undergo further evaluation -- possibly for a concussion -- and the Phillies may provide more details on his status in the near future.

  • Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong: Paces offense with big game

Crow-Armstrong went 3-for-5 with a double, two home runs and four total RBI in Wednesday's 7-6 win over the Dodgers.

Crow-Armstrong continued his stellar season with his first two home runs of the month, bringing him to 26 long balls overall. In five August games, the star outfielder is now slashing a robust .412/.545/.941, continuing a run of strong play that dates back to June following a slower start to the year. Crow-Armstrong's big game Wednesday came with Shohei Ohtani in the other dugout, who clubbed two homers of his own in what's shaping up to be a two-man race for National League MVP.

  • Braves' Mike Yastrzemski: Sitting against righty

Yastrzemski is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins.

The left-handed-hitting Yastrzemski often sits against lefties, but he'll head to the bench Wednesday while a right-hander (Eury Perez) takes the hill for the Marlins. Yastrzemski will give up his spot in the lineup to Sean Murphy, who will start behind the plate while Drake Baldwin gets a day off from catching but serves as Atlanta's designated hitter.

  • Marlins' Heriberto Hernandez: Expected to remain everyday player

Hernandez will start in left field and bat fifth in Wednesday's game against Atlanta.

Though his playing-time outlook appeared to have worsened after Owen Caissie returned from the injured list Saturday, Hernandez looks poised to remain a near-everyday player for the Marlins after Liam Hicks was traded to the Rays on Monday. Dating back to July 8, Hernandez has started in all but one of the Marlins' 22 games and has produced a .761 OPS during that span.

  • Bryan Torres LF | STL

Cardinals' Bryan Torres: Drawing fourth straight start

Torres will start in left field and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Yankees.

Torres has been an early beneficiary of Monday's trade that sent Lars Nootbaar to the Diamondbacks. With Nootbaar out of the picture, Torres will pick up his fourth consecutive start in left field. Torres has performed at a near-league-average level this season with a .239/.293/.424 slash line and 97 wRC+ over 100 plate appearances, but the 29-year-old rookie may only be a placeholder in left field until the Cardinals are ready to promote top prospect Joshua Baez from Triple-A Memphis.

  • Luis Robert CF | BAL

Mets' Luis Robert: Resting up Wednesday

Robert is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians.

The Mets have been managing Robert's workload carefully since he was activated July 20 following an extended stint on the injured list due to a lumbar spine disc herniation. He's yet to start more than three consecutive games, and that trend could continue over the final seven and a half weeks of the season while the 48-66 Mets are removed from playoff contention. A.J. Ewing will take Robert's spot in center field Wednesday.

  • Blake Dunn CF | CIN

Reds' Blake Dunn: On mend from internal brace surgery

Reds manager Terry Francona said Wednesday that the surgery Dunn underwent on his right elbow was an internal brace procedure, Charlie Goldsmith of Fox 19 Now Cincinnati reports.

Dunn was already presumed to be out for the season once he had his surgery Monday, though it wasn't known at the time what type or procedure he underwent. With the skipper confirming that Dunn had an internal brace surgery, the outfielder is expected to face a recovery timeline of around six months. With that timetable in mind, Dunn will likely face some restrictions at the start of spring training in February, and it wouldn't be surprising if he requires a brief stint on the injured list to begin the season. The 27-year-old had settled in as the Reds' primary center fielder before going down with the elbow injury in late June and finishing his 2026 campaign with a .282/.335/.387 slash line, two home runs, six steals, 20 runs and seven RBI in 38 games.
