Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright ended his month-long winless slump Sunday against the Cubs with a brilliant 11-strikeout performance. He tied Nationals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright for the league lead with 14 wins.
"That was as good as he’s been all season," manager Mike Matheny said, per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "His curveball was as sharp as we’ve seen it. He went through a little lull, but today it looked like the normal Wainwright."
Wainwright seemed very pleased with his performance Sunday.
"I was fairly sharp today and I was comfortable in my delivery. I went out with attack mode and with the right philosophy and understanding of who I was as a pitcher," he said. "Today, I wanted to set the tempo. I wanted to be in command of my stuff but also the pace of the game. I wanted to let everybody on the field know that I was in charge out there, so to speak."
