Yankees starting pitcher David Phelps earned his third win of the season Friday against the Rays, allowing four earned runs on six hits and no walks in 7 2/3 innings, while striking out three. But Phelps was forced to leave the game after getting hit on the right forearm by a line drive in the eighth inning.
It was a costly win for the Yankees, who also lost Curtis Granderson to a fractured finger in the game. Phelps, who has a 3.96 ERA, is in line to face the Mets at home Wednesday depending on the severity of the injury. The Yankees sent him for precautionary X-rays, but manager Joe Girardi told reporters after the game he doesn't think the injury is serious.
