The Tigers have signed free-agent catcher Brayan Pena to a one-year contract and designated pither Matt Hoffman for assignment, the club announced Monday.

Pena, 30, hit .236/.262/.321 (60 OPS+) for the Royals in 2012, playing 68 games as Salvador Perez's backup. Pena has spent eight seasons in MLB between Kansas City and Atlanta, with a .248/.286/.350 (72 OPS+) career line.

Hoffman, 24, has yet to make his major-league debut. The lefty spent 2012 at Triple-A Toledo, where he allowed a 3.69 ERA in 46 1/3 innings, striking out 32 and walking 16.
