Padres' Aaron Northcraft: Joins Padres for camp
Northcraft signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Sunday that includes an invite to major-league spring training.
Northcraft got his first taste of major-league action in 2021 and allowed two runs while striking out five in eight innings across five relief appearances. He was less effective in the minors, as he posted an 8.10 ERA and 2.06 WHIP in 13.1 innings across 13 appearances at Triple-A El Paso before being released in July. The right-hander will compete for a spot in the major-league bullpen ahead of the 2022 campaign but is unlikely to have a significant role for the Padres, even if he makes the Opening Day roster.

Aaron Northcraft: Time in San Diego over
The Padres released Northcraft on Tuesday.
Northcraft's release comes just days after he cleared waivers when the Padres designated him for assignment. A 2009 draft pick of Atlanta, the 31-year-old right-hander spent nearly a decade in the minors before making his big-league debut with San Diego in late April. Across five appearances in the San Diego bullpen, Northcraft gave up two earned runs on five hits and eight walks over eight innings.

Padres' Aaron Northcraft: Designated for assignment
The Padres designated Northcraft for assignment Friday.
The righty posted a 2.25 ERA in eight big-league innings before being sent down May 30. Now, the Padres have removed him from the 40-man roster to make space for pitcher Reiss Knehr, whom they selected from Double-A for Friday's start.

Padres' Aaron Northcraft: Optioned back to minors
Northcraft was optioned to Triple-A El Paso prior to Sunday's game against the Astros.
Northcraft's stay with the big club was a brief one, as he was optioned back to Triple-A just one day after his call-up. The right-hander did make an appearance Saturday, allowing one hit and two walks across two scoreless innings. He figures to be a candidate to rejoin the Friars at some point later this season.

Northcraft was recalled by the Padres on Saturday.
Northcraft spent a brief period on the big-league roster earlier in the year, allowing two runs in six innings but posting a poor 5:6 K:BB. He'll return to a low-leverage relief role for now, with Nick Ramirez getting optioned in a corresponding move.

Padres' Aaron Northcraft: Effective in big-league debut
Northcraft pitched two scoreless innings in relief against the Dodgers on Saturday, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out a pair.
The right-hander came on in the seventh inning and kept Los Angeles in check for two frames, throwing 17 of 26 pitches for strikes and allowing only two baserunners. He was making his first major-league appearance following a long stint in the minors that began in 2010. Northcraft has been a starter through most of his professional career but was successful in converting to a relief role in 2019, posting a 1.87 ERA over 33.2 innings with the Miami organization. He could carve out a role in the Padres' bullpen moving forward, though he's unlikely to work up to high-leverage situations.

Northcraft's contract was selected by the Padres on Friday.
Northcraft hasn't yet appeared in a major-league game, but he served as a non-roster invitee this spring. During that time, he made four relief appearances and allowed one hit and two walks while striking out four in 3.1 scoreless innings. Northcraft will now be available to make his major-league debut but is unlikely to pitch in high-leverage situations.

Marlins' Aaron Northcraft: Added to 60-man pool
Northcraft is part of the Marlins' 60-man player pool, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.
The 30-year-old righty has never reached the majors, but he logged a 1.87 ERA and 35:13 K:BB in 33.2 innings of relief at Triple-A last year with the Mariners, so he should be capable of handling low-leverage work if injuries force the Marlins' hand.

Marlins' Aaron Northcraft: Lands minors contract with Marlins
Northcraft signed a minor-league contract with the Marlins on Wednesday that includes an invitation to spring training.
Northcraft made his return to affiliated baseball in 2019, and he recorded a 1.85 ERA with a 0.90 WHIP over 12 appearances between the Double-A and Triple-A levels. The right-hander hasn't appeared in the majors since his career began in 2010, but he could enter the conversation for a role in the Marlins' bullpen in 2020 if he can increase his workload and remain effective.
