  • Rays' Johnny Davis: Returning to Rays

Davis signed a minor-league contract with the Rays on Monday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Davis made his major-league debut in 2019 but only managed to record four at-bats across eight games. The 29-year-old spent the majority of the past two seasons in the Mexican League, but he'll get the chance to work in the Rays' organization to begin the 2020 season.

  • Rays' Johnny Davis: Outrighted to Triple-A

Davis was outrighted to Triple-A Durham on Wednesday, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.

The 29-year-old spent most of the past two seasons in the Mexican League, but he signed with the Rays in late August and appeared in eight games in the majors last season. A good chunk of his value comes from prowess on the basepaths, as he recorded 54 stolen bases in 106 Mexican League games in 2019 before being called up by the Rays in September.

  • Rays' Johnny Davis: Not on ALDS squad

Davis is not on the Rays' roster for the ALDS.

Davis stole 54 bases in 106 Mexican League games this season before being a September callup by the Rays, making him the sort of pinch-running weapon that teams like to carry in the playoffs. The Rays elected to go with a group of players who can all fill larger roles instead.

  • Rays' Johnny Davis: Laces first big-league hit

Davis came into Friday's win over the Angels as a defensive replacement in left field in the bottom of the eighth inning, going 1-for-1 with a triple and a run.

The leadoff three-bagger in the ninth inning was the speedy Davis' first big-league hit. The 29-year-old had been picked off in a pinch-running appearance versus the Rangers on Wednesday during what was his first official appearance in a major-league game, so Friday's triple was a fitting form of atonement for his miscue.

  • Rays' Johnny Davis: Promoted to majors

Davis' contract was purchased from Triple-A Durham on Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Davis had spent most of 2018 and 2019 playing in the Mexican League but signed with Tampa Bay in late August. He only received two plate appearances (both at Double-A Montgomery) after signing but stole three bases in five games. His role in the majors will be as a pinch runner and possibly as an occassional defensive replacement in the outfield.
