Top Robinson Leyer News

  • Twins' Robinson Leyer: Signs minors deal with Minnesota

Leyer signed a minor-league contract with the Twins on Monday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.

Leyer made his big-league debut for Boston last season, but he didn't make a particularly good impression. In 4.2 innings of work, he allowed 11 earned runs and walked eight batters. He'll turn 28 in March, so he probably doesn't have a ton of development left.

  • Red Sox's Robinson Leyer: Outrighted to Triple-A

Leyer was outrighted to Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.

The 27-year-old made his big-league debut this season, but it certainly didn't go how he would have hoped. In 4.2 innings across six appearances, he gave up 11 runs on 12 hits and eight walks, giving him a 21.21 ERA and a 4.29 WHIP. He'll presumably be used in a low-leverage role if he makes it back to the majors in 2021.

  • Red Sox's Robinson Leyer: Returns to alternate site

Leyer was optioned to the alternate training site Friday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

The 27-year-old had his contract selected at the end of August and will return to the alternate site after receiving his first taste of big-league action. Leyer allowed 11 runs on 12 hits with a 9:8 K:BB across 4.2 innings.

  • Red Sox's Robinson Leyer: Gets starting nod Wednesday

The Red Sox announced Leyer as their starting pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Braves, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.

Though he'll be throwing the first pitch of the game, Leyer will presumably be limited to an inning or two before giving way to Mike Kickham, who is expected to serve as Boston's primary pitcher out of the bullpen. Leyer made his big-league debut in Monday's series opener, working one inning in relief and giving up a run on two hits and a walk.

  • Red Sox's Robinson Leyer: Contract purchased by Red Sox

Leyer's contract was purchased by Boston on Monday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

The 27-year-old righty is set to make his big-league debut. He recorded an unimpressive 5.24 ERA in 56.2 minor-league innings in the upper levels of the Mariners' and Red Sox's systems last year, with a 14.3 percent walk rate offsetting a 27.4 percent strikeout rate.

  • Red Sox's Robinson Leyer: Joins player pool

Leyer was added to the Red Sox's 60-man player pool.

Leyer, who is not on the 40-man roster, is a former starter turned reliever. He joined Boston last June after he was released by Seattle and was re-signed during the offseason. For the Red Sox in 2019, the 27-year-old native of the Dominican Republic pitched primarily at Double-A Portland where he had a 2.66 ERA with 30 strikeouts over 23.2 innings but also walked 17 (6.6 BB/9). Leyer has a live fastball that sits in the mid-to-high 90s, but only projects as bullpen depth in the upper minors unless he ever achieves consistent control.

  • Red Sox's Robinson Leyer: Gets camp invite from Boston

Leyer signed a minor-league contract with the Red Sox on Friday.

Leyer receives an invitation to big-league camp as part of the deal. The 26-year-old isn't likely to convert that invitation into an Opening Day roster spot, as he's only thrown 19.2 innings at the Triple-A level, posting a 4.58 ERA for Tacoma last season.
