• Padres' Griffin Canning: Could face hitters soon

  Canning (Achilles) tossed a "high-intensity" bullpen session Tuesday, and his next step could be facing hitters, per MLB.com. Canning continues to progress in his recovery from a torn left Achilles, though he's yet to be cleared for fielding drills. The veteran hurler is going to begin the regular season on the injured list, with late April likely the earliest feasible date for his Padres debut. San Diego's rotation is unsettled beyond the top three slots, so Canning has a good chance of getting a chance to stake his claim to a starting role once he's healthy.

  Canning (Achilles) will begin the season on the injured list but "might not be there for very long," AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. Recovering from a torn left Achilles, Canning said Tuesday that he feels 100 percent when throwing off the mound, but he still has some work to do in regard to the running and agility portion of his rehab. Cassavell suggests that Canning could be ready for his season debut around late April or early May, though a there's no clear timetable just yet. The right-hander held a 3.77 ERA and 70:35 K:BB across 76.1 innings for the Mets in 2025 before getting hurt. Once healthy, Canning should slot into the Padres' rotation.

• Mets' Griffin Canning: Diagnosed with ruptured Achilles

  The Mets placed Canning on the 60-day injured list with a ruptured left Achilles tendon Friday. Canning struck out three and gave up just one hit in 2.2 innings Thursday against Atlanta before he had to be removed from the game and helped off the field. To those that saw the injury, this was the expected outcome. Canning will miss the remainder of the 2025 season and possibly even the start of the 2026 campaign, as he has a lengthy rehab ahead of him. Canning was enjoying a career season with the Mets, but it's now over with a 7-3 record, 3.77 ERA and 70:35 K:BB across 76.1 innings and 16 starts. Blade Tidwell has been recalled from Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding move.

The righty hurler emerged as an important part of the team's rotation this season, posting a 7-3 record with a 3.77 ERA over 76.1 innings before suffering the injury. Nothing is certain yet, but if Canning is dealing with a serious injury, it would deplete the Mets' rotation further -- they are already without Kodai Senga (hamstring), Sean Manaea (oblique/elbow) and Tylor Megill (elbow).

Canning collapsed to the ground and had to be assisted off the field by trainers after stepping awkwardly on the mound during the third inning.
