Phillies' Esteban Quiroz: Traded to Phillies
The Cubs traded Quiroz to the Phillies on Thursday in exchange for cash considerations.
He's been assigned to the minor-league side of Phillies camp. Quiroz, 31, spent most of his prime years in Mexico and has appeared in only 14 total games at the MLB level, all during 2022 with the Cubs.

Cubs' Esteban Quiroz: Sent outright to Triple-A
Quiroz cleared waivers and was sent outright to Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Tim Stebbins of NBC Sports Chicago reports.
Quiroz made his MLB debut in September and appeared in 14 games for the Cubs at the end of the season. However, most of playing time came in Triple-A last season, where he posted just a .680 OPS over 148 plate appearances. Quiroz struggled to record many extra-base hits last season, which is something he will likely need to improve on if he wants a shot at returning to the majors anytime soon.

Cubs' Esteban Quiroz: Thriving out of two hole
Quiroz went 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs and an RBI in Sunday's 8-3 win over the Pirates.
Quiroz initially appeared in line to fill a depth role for the Cubs when his contract was selected from Triple-A Iowa on Sept. 17, but he's suddenly settled in as not only Chicago's primary second baseman, but also as the club's No. 2 batter. He's started five of the Cubs' last six games out of the two hole, going 7-for-18 with a 3:3 BB:K over that stretch. The 30-year-old rookie has yet to produce a home run or steal in his first 26 big-league plate appearances and didn't offer much juice in either category during his time in the minors, but his high-contact approach and favorable spot in the lineup could make him a useful contributor in the batting average and runs categories over the final week and a half of the season. Quiroz's hot run at the plate looks to have put him ahead of the slumping Christopher Morel for an everyday role in the Chicago infield.

Cubs' Esteban Quiroz: Called up Saturday
Quiroz's contract was selected from Triple-A Iowa on Saturday, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports.
Quiroz was dealt from the Rays to the Cubs in late March, and he's spent most of the year at Iowa. He's hitting just .212 over 40 games this year but has been especially productive recently, going 7-for-12 with two home runs, two doubles, five RBI and four runs over the last four games. He'll provide additional depth for the Cubs after Seiya Suzuki was placed on the paternity list.

Quiroz appeared in 68 games at Triple-A Durham last year and slashed .268/.401/.526 with 12 homers, 49 runs and 48 RBI. He'll likely begin the 2022 campaign at Triple-A Iowa.

Quiroz will be a part of the Rays' 60-man player pool this season, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
While not a member of the 40-man roster, Quiroz hit .271/.384/.539 with 19 home runs and a 122 wRC+ in 96 games in the Pacific Coast League last year, so he is ready for a shot against big-league pitching. That said, he is still behind several players on the infield depth chart, so he is unlikely to see significant playing time in 2020.

Quiroz was traded to the Rays on Thursday as the player to be named later in the December deal that saw San Diego receive Tommy Pham (side) and Jake Cronenworth in exchange for Hunter Renfroe and Xavier Edwards, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Quiroz spent the entire 2019 season with Triple-A El Paso, slashing .271/.384/.539 with 19 home runs in 96 games. He figures to open the season back at Triple-A, though Quiroz could make his big-league debut in a utility role at some point in 2020.

Quiroz went 3-for-15 with three RBI in Cactus League play. He'll likely begin the season in Triple-A ball, where he hit .271 with 19 home runs and 66 RBI in 2019.
