McGonigle inked an eight-year, $150 million contract extension with the Tigers on Wednesday and is making that move look more and more like a bargain as his rookie season progresses. Tigers' Kevin McGonigle: Agrees to $150 million extension

The Tigers signed McGonigle to an eight-year, $150 million contract extension Wednesday.
The deal will begin in 2027 and run through the 2034 season, which covers McGonigle's final five seasons of club control, plus his first three years of free agency. He'll receive a $14 million signing bonus and the contract can max out at $160 million if McGonigle reaches all escalators. It's the latest in a string of pre-arbitration contract extensions teams have handed out to young players in recent weeks. McGonigle will not turn 22 until August and is slashing .311/.417/.492 with one home run, one stolen base and an 11:8 BB:K over his first 17 games at the major-league level.

McGonigle has had a nice start to his MLB career, as he's now batting .289 with an .833 OPS across his first 10 games. His stolen base Monday was his first at the MLB level, and he's tacked on five RBI and six runs scored. McGonigle is still looking for his first MLB home run, but it's otherwise been a great rookie campaign so far, and he should continue to see regular playing time moving forward. While there might be some bumps along the way, the 21-year-old looks ready to fully break out as a fantasy star.

Making his MLB debut, McGonigle started at third base and batted sixth Opening Day, and he made quite the first impression on the heels of a strong spring training. The youngster became just the second Detroit player ever to record four hits in his first game in the majors. McGonigle is expected to see plenty of time at shortstop this year, though he covered the hot corner Thursday with Javier Baez starting at short. No matter where McGonigle plays in the field, he looks ready to make a fantasy impact right away.

The 21-year-old shortstop will end up making his MLB debut at the hot corner while Javier Baez picks up the start at shortstop. McGonigle, who is one of the top prospects in baseball, is expected to split his playing time between the two positions. He posted a .254/.369/.550 slash line with 12 homers and seven steals in 46 games at the Double-A level last year and had an .888 OPS during spring training.
