Thompson is expected to be out indefinitely while dealing with a blood clotting issue. The 21-year-old is looking to build off of his rookie season, during which he averaged 8.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.0 combined steals plus blocks while shooting 48.3 percent from the field across 25.1 minutes per game. Thompson made 63 consecutive regular-season appearances last year, but he missed the club's final 19 regular-season games due to blood clots. With the second-year swingman out, Ron Holland and Tim Hardaway are both candidates to pick up extra playing time.

Pistons' Ausar Thompson: Team option exercised
The Pistons exercised the third-year team option on Thompson's (illness) rookie contract Monday, Coty M. Davis of The Detroit News reports.
Thompson remains ineligible to play in any games until he's given clearance by the NBA Players' Association after dealing with blood clots last season. Thompson and the Pistons have remained confident the youngster will be able to continue his playing career soon, and this transaction is another step in the right direction. As a rookie, Thompson made 63 regular-season appearances, including 38 starts, and showcased a two-way game that could flourish in fantasy. However, his offensive efficiency was a disaster, as he posted 48/19/60 shooting splits.

Pistons' Ausar Thompson: Out again Wednesday
Thompson (illness) did not play during Wednesday's 108-92 preseason victory over Cleveland.
Thompson still needs medical clearance from a blood clotting issue, and missing the entirety of preseason casts an ominous light on his upcoming second season. The 21-year-old last addressed the situation at Media Day on Sept. 30, stating that there was "no timeline right now," with the matter fully in the hands of the league and NBA Players Association, per Omari Sankofa of the Detroit Free Press. Detroit president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon said Monday that Thompson (illness) will be limited to open training camp, Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Langdon said Thompson has been cleared for conditioning, strength training and non-contact drills, but the forward is still going through a medical process with the NBA's Players Association. Thompson's rookie season was cut short in March after undergoing treatment for a blood clot, and understandably, the Pistons and the NBA are taking every precaution. Pistons' Ausar Thompson: Ruled out for season
The Pistons announced Wednesday that Thompson will miss the remainder of the season while being treated for a blood clot, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
Thompson had missed the last six games due to an undisclosed illness, but Charania's report provides some added clarity on the matter. Though Thompson's first NBA season will come to a close, he's been cleared to resume conditioning and will resume non-contact basketball activities around the end of the regular season. The team plans for him to ramp up over the summer and to return to action for the start of the 2024-25 season.
