The 49ers waived James on Tuesday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
James had hoped to stick around on the 53-man roster or as a practice squad candidate, but that won't be the case. If he goes through waivers unclaimed, James will be free to sign with another club.

49ers' Chanceller James: Takes part in full practice
James (knee) was a full participant in Friday's practice, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
This was the first time since tearing his ACL last August that James was able to return to the practice field in a full capacity. Given the nature of the injury, the 49ers likely won't give the defensive back a consistently full workload during training camp, but James looks to be on track for the start of the season.

49ers' Chanceller James: Practicing in limited fashion
James (knee) was able to participate in individual drills at practice Wednesday, Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee reports.
James spent the entire 2017 season on injured reserve due a torn ACL he suffered in the 49ers' preseason opener last August. It shouldn't be long before he's cleared for full practices, but the 49ers' main priority is ensuring the 23-year-old is healthy for the start of training camp in late July.

Chanceller James: Waived with knee injury
James (knee) was waived/injured by the 49ers on Monday, Dave Southorn of the Idaho Statesman reports.
James tore his ACL on Saturday night during the 49ers' preseason opener, which is particularly concerning since he suffered the same injury twice during his college career at Boise State. If he clears waivers, he'll likely revert to the 49ers' injured reserve list.
