  • Commanders' Sam Hartman: Operating as No. 3 QB

Hartman is inactive for Thursday's game against the Cowboys but will act as Washington's emergency No. 3 quarterback. Hartman will only be eligible to suit up versus Dallas on Thursday if both Josh Johnson and Jeff Driskel are forced out of the Christmas Day contest. His opportunity to handle the emergency role comes with Jayden Daniels (elbow) and Marcus Mariota (hand) both already ruled out. Hartman is still vying for a chance to make his regular-season debut.

  • Commanders' Sam Hartman: Signed to Washington's roster

The Commanders signed Hartman from the practice squad to the active roster Wednesday. Hartman has been on the Commanders' practice squad since late August after failing to make the team's 53-man roster at the end of training camp. He has been signed to the active roster to serve as the Commanders' emergency third quarterback behind Josh Johnson and Jeff Driskel for Thursday's game against the Cowboys due to the absences of Jayden Daniels (elbow) and Marcus Mariota (hand). As the emergency QB3, Hartman would be prohibited from playing in Week 17 unless Johnson and Driskel were both to leave the game due to injury, illness or ejection. Hartman has not played in a regular-season game since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in April of 2024.

  • Sam Hartman: Sticking around in Washington

The Commanders signed Hartman to the practice squad Wednesday, Zach Selby of the team's official site reports. Hartman was unable to beat out veteran Josh Johnson for the QB3 spot on the Commanders' 53-man roster, but the former will stick around as the team's quarterback on the practice squad. Hartman completed 25 of 46 passes for 207 yards and four interceptions while turning six carries into 40 yards across the Commanders' three preseason games.

  • Commanders' Sam Hartman: Starting in preseason opener

Hartman will be the Commanders' starting quarterback for Friday's preseason game against the Patriots, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports. With Jayden Daniels and Marcus Mariota (lower leg) not suiting up, Hartman will command the offense to begin Friday's game while Josh Johnson serves as the backup. Hartman spent most of the 2024 season on the Commanders' practice squad and will get the first crack over Johnson to audition for the QB3 job.

  • Commanders' Sam Hartman: Inks future deal with Washington

The Commanders signed Hartman to a reserve/future contract Tuesday. Hartman signed with the Commanders in late April as an undrafted free agent following six years in college (five with Wake Forest, one with Notre Dame). He spent most of the year on Washington's practice squad after failing to make the 53-man roster at the end of training camp, but he had a brief stint on the Commanders' active roster due to Marcus Mariota landing on injured reserve in early September with a chest injury. Hartman would have a better chance at making Washington's 53-man roster for the 2025 campaign if Mariota opts to sign elsewhere in free agency.

Hartman will serve as the Commanders' emergency third quarterback in Monday night's matchup against the Bengals. The Notre Dame product will be allowed to enter Monday night's contest only if both Jayden Daniels and Jeff Driskel becoming unavailable due to ejection or injury.

  • Commanders' Sam Hartman: Will be emergency QB again

Hartman will serve as Washington's emergency third quarterback Sunday versus the Giants. It's the second straight week in which Hartman will serve as the emergency third QB. He'll be able to enter Sunday's contest only if both Jayden Daniels and Jeff Driskel become unavailable due to injury or ejection.

  • Commanders' Sam Hartman: Serving as emergency quarterback

Hartman (coach's decision) is designated as Washington's emergency third quarterback for Sunday's game at Tampa Bay. Though he's technically inactive, Hartman will be available to step in under center in the event that both Jayden Daniels and Jeff Driskel go down due to injury. Hartman figures to serve in that same role at least until Marcus Mariota (chest) is healthy again.

  • Commanders' Sam Hartman: Added to active roster

The Commanders signed Hartman to the active roster Saturday. The move corresponds with Marcus Mariota (chest) landing on injured reserve. With Mariota sidelined for at least the first four games of the regular season, Hartman will serve as the third-string quarterback behind starter Jayden Daniels and newly acquired backup Jeff Driskel.

  • Sam Hartman: Won't make team

  • Commanders' Sam Hartman: Finally back practicing

Hartman (shoulder) was back practicing Friday, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports. Hartman hurt his shoulder during Washington's 20-17 loss to the Jets in the Commanders' preseason opener Aug. 10. He'll return to the practice field just two days out from the team's final preseason matchup versus the Patriots. If active Sunday, the rookie quarterback will need to play at a high level if he wants to elevate himself from what will likely be a practice-squad spot this season.

  • Commanders' Sam Hartman: Ruled out to face Dolphins

Coach Dan Quinn said Thursday that Hartman (shoulder) will not suit up for Saturday's preseason game against Miami, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports. Hartman and No. 2 quarterback Marcus Mariota (groin) are both ruled out for Washington's second preseason game, so the team inked Trace McSorley as an additional depth option Thursday. As he competes for what will likely amount to a practice-squad spot at best, Hartman's next chance to suit up for exhibition action will come Aug. 25 against New England.

  • Commanders' Sam Hartman: Dealing with shoulder issue

Hartman is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury, John Keim of ESPN.com reports. It's not clear at this point when Hartman picked up the injury or how serious it might be. His absence should open up some reps at practice for veteran journeymen Marcus Mariota and Jeff Driskel.
