Days after he was absent from practice with what was reported as a personal issue, New Jersey Devils forward Brian Boyle has been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia, a type of bone marrow cancer, the team announced Tuesday.

"Devils team doctor Michael Farber, during a news conference Tuesday, said the leukemia was discovered early and is treatable," ESPN added. And Boyle himself is reportedly targeting Oct. 7, the date of New Jersey's 2017-18 opener against the Colorado Avalanche, for his anticipated return to the ice.

The recovery time frame for Boyle, 32, has not been confirmed by the Devils, who signed the veteran forward to a two-year deal this offseason after the former 2003 draft pick scored 25 points between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs a season ago.
