  • Sabres' Matt Hunwick: Time with Buffalo closing?

Hunwick (neck) will soon become an unrestricted free agent, Lance Lysowski of The Buffalo News reports.

Hunwick missed the entirety of the 2019-20 season due to a neck injury. There's been no recent word regarding his health status, but Lysowski expects the Sabres to part ways with him this offseason, especially since the Sabres run fairly deep at defense organizationally and have younger, cheaper options. Hunwick has been in the league since 2007 and has played 535 NHL games, and his career may not have much left to it.

  • Sabres' Matt Hunwick: Will miss 2019-20 campaign

Hunwick is dealing with a neck injury that will cause him to miss the entirety of the 2019-20 season. According to general manager Jason Botterill, "After further medical evaluation this offseason, we unfortunately do not expect that Matt will be physically able to play this upcoming season due to a neck condition."

Hunwick missed much of the 2018-19 season due to his lingering neck problem and this could mark the end of his professional career. The Sabres will no doubt designate the 34-year-old for long-term injured reserve in order to ease the burden of his $2.25 million cap hit. Even if Hunwick was fully fit, he probably was going to spend some time in the press box this year as a healthy scratch. If this does mark the end of the defender's career, he will retire having logged 535 NHL games for Boston, Colorado, Toronto, New York, Pittsburgh and Buffalo.

Hunwick (upper body) isn't in Detroit for the regular-season finale against the Red Wings on Saturday, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reports.

This comes as no surprise, as Hunwick ended up missing the final 11 games of the 2018-19 campaign. A bit piece to begin with, the journeyman only managed two helpers to go with a minus-7 rating over 14 games.

  • Sabres' Matt Hunwick: Being left behind

Hunwick (upper body) won't make the trip to face the Islanders on Saturday.

Hunwick missed the Sabres' last six contests due to his upper-body injury. At this point, the veteran could miss the remainder of the 2018-19 campaign, as Buffalo has just four more contests following Saturday's tilt. Even if he does receive the all-clear, the team may opt to utilize some of its youngsters and leave Hunwick in the press box.

Hunwick (upper body) remains day-to-day and won't be in action versus Detroit on Thursday.

  • Sabres' Matt Hunwick: Set to miss fourth straight game

Hunwick (upper body) is not in the lineup for Monday's game versus New Jersey.

With only two assists in 14 games, Hunwick's absence from Buffalo's lineup means very little from a fantasy perspective. Monday's game will be the fourth consecutive contest the veteran blueliner has missed due to his most recent upper-body injury. He'll now be in tough to suit up Tuesday in Ottawa.

  • Sabres' Matt Hunwick: Dealing with upper-body injury

Hunwick (upper body) is day-to-day and will not play Saturday against Montreal, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reports.

Hunwick has struggled with injury all season, though he's been able to play in five games in March, logging one point, three shots on goal and four blocked shots while averaging 16:10 of ice time per game. Buffalo has six other blueliners to look to for depth, so a recall may not be necessary.

  • Sabres' Matt Hunwick: Back in action

Hunwick (undisclosed) will return to the lineup for Thursday's game against Tampa Bay, John Vogl of The Athletic reports.

Hunwick was held out of Tuesday's game against Florida as a precaution, but he was never expected to be sidelined for long. The 33-year-old blueliner will skate with Nathan Beaulieu on the Sabres' third pairing against the Lightning.

  • Sabres' Matt Hunwick: Out Tuesday as precaution

Hunwick will not play Tuesday against the Panthers as a precautionary measure, John Vogl of The Athletic reports.

Hunwick's exclusion from the lineup will likely pave the way for Casey Nelson (upper body) to retake his spot among the group. Considering it's just a precautionary measure, there's a good chance the veteran blueliner will be available again in short order. Either way, the veteran blueliner has yet to record a point through eight games, so there's little upside for him from a fantasy standpoint.

  • Sabres' Matt Hunwick: Quiet in return from injury

Hunwick (lower body) skated 14:35 a 3-1 loss to the Jets on Sunday.

Hunwick has skated in only four games this season, failing to record a point. He was limited by a neck injury at the start of the season and hasn't done enough in his few appearances to earn more minutes from coach Phil Housley, although Zach Bogosian's lower-body injury may give Hunwick extra chances to play going forward.

  • Sabres' Matt Hunwick: Ready to rock Sunday

Hunwick (lower body) will play in Sunday's game versus the Jets, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reports.

The veteran blueliner has only played in three NHL games this season due to multiple injuries, and he has a minus-2 rating in that span. Zach Bogosian has a lower-body injury now, opening an immediate spot in the lineup for Hunwick. This move shouldn't affect the fantasy realm.

  • Sabres' Matt Hunwick: Tagged with injury

Hunwick is considered day-to-day with a lower body injury.

It hasn't been an easy season for Hunwick, who's only appeared in three games thus far. The Sabres have eight healthy defensemen, with Hunwick being the furthest down the depth chart. It's yet to be determined whether the injury will keep him out of Tuesday's contest with Minnesota, but it's quite likely he would have been scratched anyway.

  • Sabres' Matt Hunwick: Minimal usage in 2018-19

Hunwick has drawn into just two games since being recalled from his conditioning stint in mid-December.

Hunwick went without a point in his two appearances and posted a minus-1 rating while recording a pair of shots on goal. While he owns double-digit points in each of the last four seasons, Hunwick, given his age and lack of usage, can safely remain off fantasy radars as the second half opens.

  • Sabres' Matt Hunwick: Called up from conditioning stint

Hunwick (neck) has been recalled by the Sabres.

It's been a long road to recovery for Hunwick, who has yet to appear in a game for Buffalo since being acquired in the offseason. The expectation is he'll be a depth defender, as opposed to being a regular in the lineup. He could find himself in the lineup shortly though, as Jake McCabe, Casey Nelson, and Marco Scandella are currently out with injury.

Hunwick is still awaiting his 2018 Sabres debut, with the light now appearing at the end of the tunnel. While he was initially expected to be sidelined through the Christmas break, the blueliner has seemingly fast-tracked his timetable for return and could be slated for NHL action within the next week or two. Hunwick (neck) took part in Thursday's practice session, John Vogl of The Athletic reports.

While Hunwick is not expected to be ready until after the Christmas break, the fact that he was able to participate in a limited portion of practice is a step in the right direction. Even once given the all-clear, the veteran blueliner may struggle for regular minutes and will likely have to compete with Nathan Beaulieu and Casey Nelson for a spot in the lineup.
