  • Red Wings' Danny DeKeyser: Solid two-way performance

DeKeyser managed an assist to complement a plus-3 rating Thursday in a 5-2 win over the Predators.

This was the first point for DeKeyser since the defenseman returned from a leg injury last Saturday against the Panthers. He didn't play all that much (17:07) as he works to build up the strength in his leg following back surgery, but DeKeyser's performance Thursday was encouraging, as he contributed on both ends of the ice and came out unscathed.

  • Red Wings' Danny DeKeyser: Bumps to active roster

DeKeyser (leg) was promoted from the taxi squad Saturday.

DeKeyser has missed the last nine games because head coach Jeff Blashill wanted him to improve his leg strength after undergoing back surgery in Dec. of 2019. • Red Wings' Danny DeKeyser: Rehabbing leg post surgery

Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said he would like to see DeKeyser -- who was waived and subsequently relegated to the taxi squad -- improve his leg strength following surgery, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.

DeKeyser underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back in Dec. of 2019, and while he has demonstrated progress, Blashill added that the defenseman is "playing at way less than 100 percent." This floundering Detroit team figures to rely more on the likes of Christian Djoos and Patrik Nemeth until DeKeyser works his way back into the NHL lineup; he's reportedly been practicing with the big club in the meantime.

DeKeyser was waived by the Red Wings on Sunday, Sportsnet's Chris Johnston reports.

  • Red Wings' Danny DeKeyser: Tickles twine for first time

Dekeyser pulled Detroit to within 4-3 in the third period, releasing a point shot that found its way through multiple bodies in front. Never a big offensive producer, the ninth-year veteran had gone his first seven games of 2020-21 without a single point.

  • Red Wings' Danny DeKeyser: On ice Friday

DeKeyser took part in Friday's training camp session, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports, indicating the blueliner has recovered from his back injury.

DeKeyser last played Oct. 22, 2019 versus the Canucks so he'll certainly have some rust to shake off. Injuries have limited the defenseman to just 60 games over the previous two seasons during which he's registered five goals, 19 assists and 85 hits. If he can stay healthy, DeKeyser could certainly chip in 15-20 points this year and provide decent fantasy value in deeper formats.

  • Red Wings' Danny DeKeyser: No return in sight

DeKeyser (back) remains on injured reserve, according to the NHL's official media site.

This isn't all that surprising considering the Red Wings announced in December that DeKeyser needed back surgery. We're talking about a team that was eliminated from playoff contention before the trade deadline, therefore, rushing back DeKeyser would be a fruitless endeavor. It's a real shame that Danny D has experienced this injury; he started the season hot with four helpers over eight games. The Detroit native has two more years remaining on his contract worth $5 million AAV.
