  • Sergei Shumakov: Signs overseas

Shumakov agreed to terms on a three-year contract with Avangard Omsk (KHL) on Wednesday.

Shumakov -- who was released by the Capitals on Dec. 6 -- will head back to the KHL, where he played the last seven seasons. The winger wasn't able to earn a call-up from Washington during his brief time with the organization and seems unlikely to get another shot in the NHL at this point.

  • Capitals' Sergei Shumakov: Set for release

Shumakov will be waived unconditionally by the Capitals, Isabelle Khurshudyan of The Washington Post reports.

In 10 games with AHL Hershey, Shumakov has tallied three goals and one assist, but with no call-up on the horizon, the winger may have asked for his release in order to return to the KHL. If no club submits a claim, the Russian figures to head back to his homeland for the rest of the 2018-19 campaign and that likely will mark the end of his chances of suiting up in the NHL.

  • Capitals' Sergei Shumakov: Productive since return

Shumakov (upper body) has a goal and an assist in three games for AHL Hershey since returning to the lineup.

Shumakov was out for more than a month with an apparent arm injury, but he has two points in his last three games since his return. With a logjam of wingers ahead of him on the organizational depth chart, the 26-year-old is likely to spend the balance of the season in the minors unless injuries enable him to be recalled. The Russian has three goals and four points in eight games for the Bears.

  • Capitals' Sergei Shumakov: Out indefinitely with upper-body injury

Shumakov (arm) is considered week-to-week with an upper body injury, Isabelle Khurshudyan of The Washington Post reports.

The news is in reference to an Instagram post from Shumakov's account showing his right arm in a cast, prompting AHL Hershey to give an injury update. The Russian winger had two goals in five games with the Bears after a solid training camp with the Capitals but will need to heal before continuing his climb up the organizational depth chart.

  • Capitals' Sergei Shumakov: Arrives in DC

Shumakov was on the ice for Sunday's scrimmage at the Capitals practice facility, Tom Gulitti of NHL.com reports.

With the visa issues now behind him, Shumakov can now focus on building his case to make the opening night roster. The skilled winger owns plenty of offensive upside and could have some deep sleeper value if he can stick in the NHL ranks and carve out a meaningful role for himself so keep an eye on his progress during the preseason.

  • Capitals' Sergei Shumakov: Almost ready to link up with team

Shumakov is expected to join the Capitals on Saturday after he settles a visa issue, Tom Gulitti of NHL.com reports.

The Capitals signed the KHL star Sept. 1, following a campaign with CSKA Moscow in which he deposited 17 goals and 23 assists to complement a plus-28 rating over 47 regular-season contests. Joining the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Russian could prove to be a solid source of scoring, even in the bottom-six group.
