The Head-to-Head categories format, which pits two teams against each other each week while implementing 5x5 scoring rather than points, tends to be most popular on competitor sites like Yahoo but is of course also available through CBS. And it brings its own challenges that allow for distinct approaches.

The quirks are worth noting upfront: two utility spots instead of one, four flex pitcher spots in addition to two SPs and two RPs, a weekly innings minimum, etc. The 5x5 scoring keeps the emphasis on stolen bases high, but with fewer lineup spots to fill than in standard Rotisserie, you can't afford too many detours for the sake of one category. And by "too many," I mean more than one.

It's why if I don't take care of stolen bases early in this format, with players who'll offer me big production across the board, I'm probably just punting -- or something close to it. Even in Rotisserie, I'm making a point not to sell out for stolen bases, content instead to keep feeding the home run monster, but it goes double for this format, which measures stolen bases a week at a time rather than across a full season. Say your lineup features four guys projected for 15-20 steals. What's that going to look like from week to week? One here, two there, five there, none here? I don't understand what you're actually assuring yourself, and if securing those four costs you in the other categories, it hardly seems worth it.

The one steals specialist I'll make an exception for is Adalberto Mondesi, whose frequent injuries have him on people's bad side right now. But I like him even more in this format than Rotisserie. He's so uniquely prolific in that scarcest category that he might single-handedly win it for you every week that he's healthy. It's like a cheat code, and if he's available for even half the season, he'll have been worth it.

Turns out I got the best of both worlds in this draft, nabbing Luis Robert and Cedric Mullins in Rounds 2-3 while also scoring Mondesi in Round 7. It puts me in as good a position as I'll ever be for stolen bases, but it cost me dearly at starting pitcher, where I have Charlie Morton, Justin Verlander and Ranger Suarez leading the way.

If there's a format where I'm willing to go light at starting pitcher, though, it's this one. Ratio stats like ERA and WHIP are the least predictable from week to week. It only takes one bad outing to sink both. Meanwhile, you can always turn to middle relievers if your starting pitchers aren't getting it done. My hope, though, is that some of the bounce-back candidates I grabbed late will make up for my deficiencies early.
