The Padres outrighted Altavilla (elbow) to Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday, Shaun O'Neill of MLB.com reports.
Altavilla spent most of the season on the 60-day injured list and underwent Tommy John surgery in June, so it's not a major surprise the Friars won't keep him on the 40-man roster through the offseason. The 29-year-old will miss most, if not all, of the 2022 campaign, but there's a chance he'll be able to return during the second half if his rehab goes smoothly.
