  • Nationals' Andres Chaparro: Playing time on downturn

Chaparro is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Padres.

Chaparro still appears to be locked into a regular spot in the lineup versus left-handed pitching, but his playing time against righties is trending down following the recent return of James Wood from the injured list. The Nationals will keep Chaparro on the bench Monday for the third time in their last four games matchups against a right-handed starter (Nick Pivetta).

  • Ryan O'Hearn 1B | PIT

Pirates' Ryan O'Hearn: Kicking off rehab Tuesday

O'Hearn (quadriceps) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday, Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

O'Hearn has not played in a game since he went down with a left quad strain in late July, but he's been cleared to test things out with the Pirates' top minor-league affiliate. The 31-year-old is aiming to be reinstated to the active roster ahead of this weekend's series at Wrigley Field against the Cubs.

  • Michael Busch 1B | CHC

Cubs' Michael Busch: Taking seat for series opener

Busch is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Brewers.

Busch will head to the bench as the Cubs roll out a right-handed-heavy lineup to counter Brewers southpaw Robert Gasser. BJ Murray will get the nod at first base in place of Busch.

  • Jake Bauers 1B | MIL

Brewers' Jake Bauers: Getting day off for injury management

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said that Bauers is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cubs as part of his maintenance plan for shin splints, Hunter Baumgardt of Fox Sports 920 Milwaukee reports.

Bauers recently revealed that he was diagnosed with shin splints Aug. 23, and the injury is something that is unlikely to improve while he intends to play through it the rest of the season. In an effort to help Bauers manage the injury, he'll be given periodic rest days, and the Brewers decided that keeping the left-handed hitter on the bench Monday was an optimal time to do so while southpaw Matthew Boyd takes the hill for the Cubs. Andrew Vaughn will step in at first base in place of Bauers, who went 6-for-25 with a home run, a stolen base and a whopping 16 walks while starting in nine of the Brewers' previous 10 games.

  • Jared Young 1B | NYM

Mets' Jared Young: Exiting starting lineup

Young is not in the lineup for Monday's game in Miami.

It's a rare day out of the lineup against a righty for Young, who is sporting a .794 OPS versus right-handed pitching this season. He will yield to Brett Baty at first base.

  • Diamondbacks' Ildemaro Vargas: Starts after sitting previous two games

Vargas started at first base in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Astros and went 1-for-4 at the plate.

After starting in all but one of the Diamondbacks' 19 games from Aug. 14 through Wednesday, Vargas wasn't included in the lineup for either of the club's first two games in Houston before he entered the starting nine Sunday. He ended up shifting from first base to shortstop when Geraldo Perdomo was removed from the contest after being struck by a line drive off his helmet in the third inning. Vargas' playing time has dried up now that Ketel Marte -- who had been serving as the designated hitter upon his activation off the injured list -- has reclaimed his primary job as the starting second baseman. However, if Perdomo misses further time, Vargas could see his opportunities pick back up.

  • Ryan O'Hearn 1B | PIT

Pirates' Ryan O'Hearn: Closing in on rehab assignment

Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said Sunday that he's hopeful that O'Hearn (quadriceps) will begin a minor-league rehab assignment "early-ish" during the upcoming week, Danny Demilio of PittsburghBaseballNow.com reports.

On the shelf since Aug. 1 due to a left quad strain, O'Hearn resumed taking part in light baseball activities just over two weeks after sustaining the injury and recently moved his rehab program to Pittsburgh. O'Hearn appears to have steered clear of any setbacks while ramping up and is now ready to move on to the final phase of his recovery by getting in some competitive at-bats in minor-league games. The 31-year-old is believed to be targeting a return from the injured list during next weekend's series in Chicago versus the Cubs, but the Pirates will wait and see how he fares on his rehab assignment before deciding when he'll be activated.

  • Abimelec Ortiz 1B | WAS

Nationals' Abimelec Ortiz: Sitting against lefty

Ortiz is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Dodgers.

Ortiz continues to see time in the heart of the batting order against right-handed pitching, but he will head to the bench against another lefty (Justin Wrobleski), as he did Friday against Blake Snell in the series opener. Andres Chaparro will step in for Ortiz at first base. Through his first 31 games in the majors, the 24-year-old Ortiz is slashing .202/.240/.384 with five homers and 11 RBI.

  • TJ Rumfield 1B | COL

Rockies' TJ Rumfield: Collects three hits in loss

Rumfield went 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's 10-8 loss to the Cardinals.

Rumfield has continued to take care of business lately, going 17-for-38 (.447) with six extra-base hits and seven RBI during his 11-game hitting streak. The first baseman also has a studly 12:4 BB:K in that span. For the season, the rookie has reaped the rewards of hitting in Colorado, batting .299 with an .849 OPS over 139 contests, with those numbers bumping up to .307 and .890, respectively, when at home. He's added 15 home runs, 67 RBI, 61 runs scored, 28 doubles and three triples overall.

  • Alec Burleson 1B | STL

Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Three-hit showing in win

Burleson went 3-for-5 with a double, one RBI and one run scored in Sunday's 10-8 win over the Rockies.

Burleson's bat had gone a little cold to start September -- he went 2-for-21 over his first five games of the month before breaking out of the funk Sunday. For the season, the first baseman is hitting .283 with an .809 OPS, 21 home runs, 103 RBI, 79 runs scored, 34 doubles, one triple and four stolen bases. He ranks second in the majors in RBI and is tied for first in doubles.
