  • Jose Fermin LF | STL

    Cardinals' Jose Fermin: Sitting Friday

Fermin is not in the Cardinals' starting lineup against the Rockies on Friday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Fermin will take a breather while Bryan Torres will start at second base and bat out of the leadoff spot. Fermin has gone 7-for-28 with two steals, one RBI and four runs scored over his last seven games.

  • Pirates' Esmerlyn Valdez: Sitting again Friday

Valdez is not in the Pirates' starting lineup against the Angels on Friday.

Valdez is out of the lineup for a second consecutive game, with Jake Mangum, Oneil Cruz and Bryan Reynolds starting in the outfield from left to right. Valdez has gone 6-for-37 (.162) with two home runs, four RBI and a 5:21 BB:K over his last 10 outings.

  • Jakob Marsee CF | MIA

Marlins' Jakob Marsee: Sitting versus lefty

Marsee is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Cubs.

Marsee started the previous six games -- including three versus left-handed pitching -- but will hit the bench against Chicago southpaw Shota Imanaga on Friday. Esteury Ruiz is manning center field and batting sixth in the series opener for Miami.

  • Owen Caissie RF | MIA

Marlins' Owen Caissie: Held out of Friday's lineup

Caissie (neck) is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Cubs.

It's the third straight absence for Caissie as he battles neck spasms, though he may have been on the bench regardless Friday against Chicago southpaw Shota Imanaga. Griffin Conine will shift to right field while Agustin Ramirez bats fifth as the designated hitter.

  • Joshua Lowe LF | LAA

Angels' Josh Lowe: Out again Friday

Lowe (neck) remains out of the lineup for Friday's game in Pittsburgh.

Lowe had to be scratched from the Angels' last lineup Wednesday versus the Yankees with neck stiffness, and he'll remain out even after the team off day Thursday. Wade Meckler will shift over to right field, and Jose Siri will handle left field.

  • Red Sox's Ceddanne Rafaela: Sitting again Friday

Rafaela (quadriceps) is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Orioles, Chris Henrique of BostonSportsJournal.com reports.

It's the second consecutive absence for Rafaela after he exited Wednesday's game against the Mariners due to quad tightness. There's been no suggestion yet the 25-year-old will need an IL stint, however. Eli White is picking up a second straight start in center field for Boston.

  • A.J. Ewing CF | NYM

Mets' A.J. Ewing: Sitting against lefty

Ewing is absent from the lineup for Friday's game against the Giants.

The left-handed hitter will get a breather as the Giants send southpaw Matt Wilkinson to the bump. Nick Morabito will patrol center field in Ewing's place and bat ninth for the Mets.

  • Braves' Michael Harris: On bench Friday

Harris is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Phillies.

Harris finds himself on the bench after starting the previous 24 contests. The 25-year-old went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run Wednesday against the Nationals, which ended a modest six-game hit streak during which he batted .409 (9-for-22) with two doubles, three homers and two steals. Mauricio Dubon is manning center field Friday while Ha-Seong Kim starts at shortstop.

  • Jorge Barrosa LF | HOU

Diamondbacks' Jorge Barrosa: Loses spot on 40-man roster

The Diamondbacks designated Barrosa for assignment Friday.

Arizona needed to free an active roster spot for the return of Tommy Troy (shoulder). Barrosa is a plus defensive outfielder but has slashed only .180/.241/.302 over parts of three major-league seasons.

  • Tommy Troy LF | ARI

Diamondbacks' Tommy Troy: Reinstated from injured list

The Diamondbacks activated Troy (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list Friday.

Troy has been sidelined for almost two months with a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder, but he's been cleared for big-league action after going 9-for-25 with one home run and a 6:5 BB:K over seven rehab games with Triple-A Reno. The 24-year-old was garnering regular playing time when he got hurt, but Arizona has since traded for Lars Nootbaar and has had other outfielders return from injury, so Troy might struggle to crack the lineup on a steady basis in September.
