Nelson was designated for the NHL's COVID-19 protocols Tuesday.
Nelson was just four games back from a lower-body injury when the league shut down for the extended Christmas break and now faces the possibility of missing out against Detroit on Wednesday and possibly beyond. With seven players currently in the protocols, the Islanders could also see their upcoming back-to-back with the Wings and Sabres on Wednesday and Thursday postponed.
