Oak Hill Academy's Steve Smith, high school basketball's active coaching wins leader, set to retire in July
Smith, 66, has been at the helm of Oak Hill Academy for 38 seasons and in that time has won 1,225 games.

Oak Hill Academy's Steve Smith, who is high school basketball's active coaching wins leader, announced that he will retire at the conclusion of the 2021-22 season. The 66-year-old head coach has been at the helm of Oak Hill Academy for 38 seasons and in that time has won 1,225 games.
Smith currently has the third-most coaching wins behind Dunbar's (Texas) Robert Hughes (1,333 wins) and DeMatha's (Md.) Morgan Wootten (1,274). In addition, Smith has also only lost 98 games across his 38 seasons at Oak Hill Academy.
Smith has coached numerous NBA stars at Oak Hill Academy, including Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony and Rajon Rondo. He's also coached 34 McDonald's All-American and 36 of his players have been selected in the NBA Draft.
"I still love the game and enjoy coaching, but I just feel like its time to step away," Smith told MaxPreps. "I'm excited to spend more time with my two grandkids, relax and play some more golf. I have been fortunate enough to have a great career here at Oak Hill Academy and coach a lot of great players and teams over the years."
Per Oak Hill Academy's official website, the school has finished among the nation's top 25 teams in all but one of Smith's seasons since he took the heading coach position in 1985. Smith has also led the Warriors to eight national championship and even won 65 consecutive games in the early 2000s.
With Smith stepping down at the end of this season, it is likely that Charles Smith from Peabody High School in Louisiana will becomes the active coaching wins leader at 1,087.
