Yes, he still has only two home runs, and yes, you might be starting to panic with more than a month now in the books. But in recent days, Edwin Encarnacion really has started to look more like himself.
No, his .211 batting average in his last five games doesn't inspire much confidence, but the six walks to only two strikeouts should. It's a stark contrast to the 11 walks to 25 strikeouts he had in his first 26 games, and it's more in line with what made him so dominant the last two years.
He wasn't just raw power in 2012 and 2013, when he averaged 39 home runs. He was one of the most disciplined hitters in the game, averaging 83 walks to 78 strikeouts.
The number of players in today's game who can hit that many home runs while walking more than they strike out are few and far between, which is part of what makes Encarnacion so special. And it suggests that when he was whiffing every third at-bat over the first couple weeks, something was off, whether mentally or mechanically.
Now that it's back on, the home runs should soon follow.
