Top Dan Butler News

  • Dan Butler: Announces retirement

Butler retired from baseball Tuesday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Butler spent 10 years in Boston's minor-league system, appearing in nine games at the major-league level, including a pair in 2018. That brief cameo earned him a World Series ring after the Red Sox were crowned champions in October. The 32-year-old will join the Diamondbacks as a bullpen catcher.

  • Red Sox's Dan Butler: Outrighted to Pawtucket

Butler cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Pawtucket on Wednesday, Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston reports.

Butler was recently designated for assignment but will remain in the organization after passing through waivers unclaimed. The catcher has played in two games with the Red Sox this year and is slashing .202/.312/.322 across 58 contests with Pawtucket.

  • Red Sox's Dan Butler: Designated for assignment

Butler was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Tuesday.

Butler is out of options, so the Red Sox were forced to drop him from their 40-man roster in order to clear a spot for Blake Swihart, who was returned from the disabled list in a corresponding move. The 31-year-old catcher went 1-for-6 in a pair of starts for the Red Sox before being DFA'd. Butler will take a spin through waivers to determine where he'll head next.

  • Red Sox's Dan Butler: Starts Friday

Butler started Friday and went 1-for-4 in a 19-12 victory over the Orioles.

Butler made his first start for the Red Sox since he was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket last week as Sandy Leon started the last six games before getting the night off. With a doubleheader Saturday, Butler will likely start one of those games, which figures to be his final start while up with Boston. Blake Swihart (hamstring) is expected to be activated for the Red Sox's two-game series in Philadelphia beginning on Tuesday.

  • Red Sox's Dan Butler: Contract purchased from minors

Butler has his contract selected from Triple-A Pawtucket on Friday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Butler will take the place of Blake Swihart on the 25-man roster, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list due to a hamstring injury in a corresponding move. Manager Alex Cora stated that Sandy Leon will catch the remaining three games against the Yankees this weekend, but Butler will serve as his backup and should see a little playing time while Swihart is on the shelf.

  • Red Sox's Dan Butler: Re-signs with Red Sox

Butler agreed to a deal with the Red Sox on Thursday, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.

Butler spent his 2017 campaign with Triple-A Pawtucket, slashing .259/.336/.375 over 266 plate appearances. He became a free agent at season's end but will be brought back on board with the team he's spent eight of the past nine years with. He'll likely serve as organizational catching depth and isn't likely to emerge onto the fantasy radar any time soon.

  • Red Sox's Dan Butler: Reassigned to minors

Butler has been reassigned to minor league camp, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

No surprises here. With Sandy Leon and Christian Vazquez set to start the season in Boston, there was no room for Butler. The 30-year-old veteran backstop is no stranger to the Red Sox, having been with the organization since 2009 before spending last season with the Nationals.

  • Red Sox's Dan Butler: Lands NRI deal with Red Sox

Butler signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox on Tuesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Tim Britton of the Providence Journal reports.

The 30-year-old also spent the 2016 season in the Red Sox organization, putting together a surprisingly solid campaign as the backup catcher for Triple-A Pawtucket. With many other options ahead of him in the pecking order, it seems like Butler is destined for an organizational depth role in 2017 as well.

Butler was added to the roster in January to provide organizational depth, and he'll likely spend the bulk of the year at Triple-A Pawtucket with the Red Sox seemingly set at the catcher position.
