Padres' Nick Pivetta: Tapped for Game 3
Pivetta is scheduled to start Game 3 of the NLDS against the Brewers on Tuesday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
The 33-year-old pitched in Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series versus the Cubs on Wednesday, allowing a run on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks over 3.1 innings. Since returning from a flexor strain in early September, Pivetta has a 1.64 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 22:4 K:BB across 22 frames in five games, including the playoff start.

Padres' Nick Pivetta: Lasts 3.1 frames in win
Pivetta didn't factor in the decision in Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Cubs on Wednesday. He allowed one run on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks over 3.1 innings.
The right-hander wasn't particularly sharp as he threw just 36 of 66 pitches for strikes, but all three hits he gave up were singles as he limited Chicago to a single run. Pivetta missed most of the season after suffering a flexor strain in mid-April, but he returned from the IL in early September and posted a 1.45 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 18:2 K:BB across four starts to close out the regular season. He now tentatively lines up to take the mound in the NLDS versus the Brewers, potentially in Game 3 on Tuesday.

Padres' Nick Pivetta: Fans seven in no-decision
Pivetta allowed four hits, a walk and a hit batsman while striking out seven over 4.2 scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Thursday.
Pivetta pitched well but wasn't particularly efficient with 87 pitches (59 strikes) in this outing. The right-hander gave up just three runs across 18.2 innings in September after a nearly five-month layoff due to a flexor strain. He ends the regular season with a 3-2 record, 2.86 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 42:8 K:BB across 34.2 innings over eight starts. It's unclear what role he'll have if the Padres secure a postseason berth, but based on recent usage, he may be limited if he functions as a starter.

Padres' Nick Pivetta: Collects third win
Pivetta (3-2) allowed one run on four hits and a walk while striking out four over five innings to earn the win over the Marlins on Friday.
Pivetta has given up just three runs over 14 innings since he returned from a right flexor strain. The lone run on his line Friday came on an Agustin Ramirez homer in the third inning. Pivetta is at a 3.30 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 35:7 K:BB across 30 innings over seven starts in the majors this season. He is lined up to make his last regular-season start on the road versus the Dodgers next week.

Padres' Nick Pivetta: Lasts four innings Sunday
Pivetta did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks over four innings against the Giants. He struck out five.
Pivetta was mostly solid, with his lone blemish being a two-run homer surrendered to Andrew Knizner in the second inning. Making just his second start back from a right flexor strain dating back to mid-April, the right-hander was lifted at 69 pitches (46 strikes) and fell short of qualifying for the win. In 25 innings (six starts), the 33-year-old owns a 2-2 record with a 3.60 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 31:6 K:BB. Pivetta is tentatively scheduled to pitch Friday against the Marlins.

Padres' Nick Pivetta: Sharp following lengthy absence
Pivetta (2-2) earned the win over Washington on Monday, allowing two hits and striking out two batters over five scoreless innings. He did not issue a walk.
Pivetta missed nearly five months of MLB action and logged just three minor-league rehab appearances after landing on the IL in mid-April due to a right flexor strain, so his workload was limited to 63 pitches in his return. Nonetheless, the veteran righty was able to go deep enough to notch a victory, as he allowed the Nationals to put only two runners on base. Pivetta ended the outing on a high note by retiring the final seven batters he faced, and about the only detail that wasn't positive from a fantasy perspective is that he notched only two punchouts (and just one whiff). The Padres are battling for a wild-card spot in the NL, so the team doesn't figure to hold Pivetta back too much, though it's likely he'll need a few more starts to ramp up to a full workload. He's next scheduled to take the mound this weekend in San Francisco.

Padres' Nick Pivetta: Returns from IL for Monday's start
The Padres activated Pivetta (forearm) from the 60-day injured list Monday.
Pivetta will rejoin the Padres rotation with a start Monday against the Nationals after missing nearly five months of action due to a flexor strain. The veteran right-hander fanned seven over 4.1 shutout innings in his final rehab start with Triple-A El Paso on Aug. 30. Pivetta threw 64 pitches in that outing, so he won't be ready to handle a full workload Monday.

Padres' Nick Pivetta: Starting Monday against Nats
Pivetta (forearm) will be activated from the 60-day injured list to start Monday's game against the Nationals, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Pivetta has been cleared to take the mound in a big-league game for the first time since April 12 after throwing 4.1 scoreless innings and punching out seven in a rehab start with Triple-A El Paso on Aug. 30. Last month, it looked like Pivetta's season might be over when he removed himself from a minor-league game in the middle of an at-bat, but he has progressed without setbacks since. He built up to 64 pitches in his final rehab outing last Sunday.

Padres' Nick Pivetta: Dominant in rehab start
Pivetta (forearm) struck out seven and allowed two hits and one walk over 4.1 scoreless innings in a rehab start with Triple-A El Paso on Sunday.
Pivetta took a step up in competition Sunday after he made the first two starts of his rehab assignment with Single-A Elsinore. The right-hander had no trouble against the Triple-A competition, tossing 44 of 64 total pitches for strikes over his scoreless outing while sitting around 93 mph with his fastball for most of the game. Pivetta -- who has been on the shelf since April 14 while recovering from a right flexor strain -- will presumably need one more rehab start before rejoining the San Diego rotation.

Padres' Nick Pivetta: Works three innings in rehab start
Pivetta (forearm) struck out four and allowed three earned runs on four hits and one walk in three innings Tuesday in a rehab start with Single-A Lake Elsinore.
After a three-week hiatus following a setback with his right forearm, Pivetta resumed his minor-league rehab assignment and made a second start with Lake Elsinore. Though his command was lacking while he allowed three extra-base hits -- including two home runs -- on the night, Pivetta was at least able to pound the strike zone (35 strikes on 47 pitches). Pivetta will need at least one more rehab start to continue building up his pitch count before the Padres consider bringing him back from the 60-day injured list and inserting him into the rotation. The veteran righty has been on the shelf since April 14.

Padres' Nick Pivetta: Resuming rehab assignment this week
Pivetta (forearm) will resume a rehab assignment with Single-A Lake Elsinore on Tuesday, Annie Heilbrunn of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Pivetta exited his first rehab appearance earlier this month when he felt tightness in his right elbow, but he's bounced back quickly and is ready to rejoin an affiliate for game action. The veteran right-hander has been out since mid-April due to a flexor strain, and given the length of his absence, he'll need multiple starts in the minors before rejoining the San Diego rotation.
